As high as the engine will let. Just before the limiter, it will put you higher in the RPM range in the subsequent gear. Take it out for a WOT run before you hit the strip. Take a look at the tach to get a guage. It is not the most accurate, but going by sound doesnt always work.

if you dont have a shift lite the stock tach is reallllly slow. When I had lid/tune/freemods I had my shiftlite set at 5800 I belive, and the 1-2 I'd get at 6050-6100, and the rest at 59xx, and scans of the run. But the 1-2 the factory tach is was way behind. I'd not let off the gas powershifting and see the tach still going up after I was in 2nd and a few secs alreay. lol
Just a heads up if your gona try to test rpms this good using the stock tach, scan the car and see how slow yours it/fast you shift, and were you rev limiter is set at. But off the stock tach probally have to do like a 5400 1-2 5600 2-3 5800 3-4. Just so you dont tag the limiter on the 1-2

Yea, and when you make even more power 1st gear comes kinda quick and the tach isnt ready, but 2 thru 4th seem much better.

I have a shift light for that

agree with studderin just shift a touch earlier than the rev limiter

This year I've raced twice and besides my horrible 60's I always shifted at 6000rpm and after the 2nd time which was at my old track I found out I was running consistently slower than last year by about .2-.4

I used to be scared to wind it all the way out (especially with stock pushrods).

This year I was ready to wind it all the way out and power shift. The shifts were very fast but 6000 is not the right rpm for the stock cam on Fbodies.

My last run Friday I took my shift light off and just went off the stock tach which made me shift a little earlier than with the light. Funny thing is I ran my best time of the night that run. I think I was shifting at like 5800. I wonder if power shifting at 5500 or 5600 would be best?

There has to be a tried and true method to consistently running times with a manual.

I've heard shift to where when the tach drops back it falls right back on peak torque. That sounds too early for our cars.

i try shifting right before my rev limiter but its hard to watch the tach and the track and shift so i invested in a shift light and set it at 6500( my rev limiter) so i get perfect shiftes everytime... one of the best investement IMO for a six speed

Best ET I ever got out of my friend's bolt on cars was shifting at 6100 rpm on a shift light. It gave me ~ 50RPM before the revlimiter [which I never hit]

I never look at the tach while shifting, because as other's have said, it is way to slow.

I recomend getting a Raptor shift light. Set it to 6100. If you hit the limiter on the shift, set it to 6050. Go down untill you are no longer hitting the limiter. Then, as you gain more experience, start turning it up to the 6100 area.

I dont remember the 1/8 miles times at all...

This was over 3 or 4 years ago. Both times were in the 11.7's nothing special by todays standards, but this was before Fast 90mm intakes and so on.

The cars belonged to LS1tech members Durian512 [49 on list, done in '04] and Aliwantsnss [38 on list, done in '05]

i agree, i used to shift at "6000 rpm" cuz it was so simple to see on the tach, then ig ot my dyno back and i peaked at 5600ish, so i figured i should prob shift at 5900 but didnt..

with my new shiftlight, i always feel like im shifting at 6050rpm even though its set for 5700, was debating lowering it but I know my tach is more off than Richard Simmons

is powershifting to you= letting off the gas for split second shift! apply throttle? or

never let off throttle.shifting while always on throttle?

people seem to throw powershifting in different ways. so what way is it?
