Why can't I hook?

Ok I guess I'll start by telling about my setup. The car is an 01 SS.

Power mods:
Basically full bolt-ons, but no FAST or EWP.

Trans:
Stock A4 with Yank PT4000 and cooler

Rear:
Moser 12-bolt w/ 3.73s and Eaton posi

Suspension:
Front suspension is totally stock except for a removed front swaybar.
Rear suspension is BMR adj tq arm set at -2, poly/rod LCAs in the bottom hole of the brackets, UMI tq arm relocation crossmember, BMR adj PHB. Stock shocks, springs, and sway bar.

Wheels/Tires:
15x3.5 Prostars in front w/ 26" MT Sportsmans
16x8 Trans Am wheels in back w/ 26x11.5 ET Streets in back. I've tried everywhere between 15-20 PSI in them.

So when I had the 3.23 10 bolt in the car, even with the posi failing (one wheel burnouts), the car was cutting 1.58-1.63s pretty consistently. I put in the 12 bolt, tq arm relo crossmember, and PHB in all at once. I figure the car should hook much better now with steeper gears and a working posi. Nope. My best 60' time since the 12 bolt install is a 1.73. It just spins every time. My launch technique is stall it up to 1000 RPM and flashing the converter from there.

Any advice on things I can change w/ my existing setup? I don't really have the cash for any new parts right now. I just can't figure out why it won't hook now that I actually have 2 wheels pushing me forward.

Please help.

If not already tried set all of your adjustable stuff as close to the stock locations as possible. and start from there. Your gear will make traction even harder to tame BTW.

i run 12.5 to 13 psi in my 26x10.5x16 et streets, pinion angle at -1.5 and stall to 2500 on my 3600 converter. i have 3.73s and a slow bolt on car 8.30's 1/8 mile with a 1.80 60' every pass, my car never even thinks about spinning even when the track sucks, so i would suggest airing down a little more.

MikeG Jun 3, 2009 08:48 PM

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I guess the only thing that's not on the stock setting right now is the LCAs. I'll move them up a couple notches and see if that helps. I'll try airing down the tires more if that doesn't help.

Any other thoughts?

Are the tires in good shape? Whats your burnout technique?

waterbug1999 Jun 4, 2009 12:56 AM

I had the same issues with my ET Streets over this past weekend... I was told to keep dropping the pressure until it hooks... Ill have to try it when I go back...

MikeG Jun 4, 2009 08:58 AM

Tires are in really good shape actually. For burn outs I usually wait till I see smoke then keep going another 3-4 seconds or so.

Captain InsaneO Jun 4, 2009 09:11 AM

With ET streets I have had good luck with 12-13 PSI and my burnout is short. I stay in the water box till they smoke, then roll out of it. I have stock front suspension and still cut 1.56 60'

Try moving your lower control arms up one hole. Once you change your gears its a completely different car. Give me a call at the office and we can go over your setup.

For what your making for power, your doing better then some guys out there with more. That auto does make a big difference.

Get line lock on the car to ensure a proper burnout.

when i was about at your power level it is about time to upgrade the rear sway bar to a drag bar...i needed to add a spohn bolt in rear drag bar setup because i was hooking on the line and then unloading a few feet out...you are just blowing the tires off but i bet it is due to the added gears and where you power level is...also ditch the ET Streets when you get a chance and go to the MT drag radials much better...or slick if you have an extra set of rims...

Hmm, maybe I'll drop them that low if it won't hook next time out. It's scary enough at the top end at 15 PSI for me though.

I moved them back to the stock location for now. I will give you a ring if I don't have any better luck next time out.

Yeah, the car will get a line lock sometime soon.

Well it's not hooking at the line at all, so I'm not having the unloading problem as of yet. The rear bar will be my next susp. mod though. I'm gonna go with some Hoosier DRs as soon as I get some funds. Lighter than MTs and hook as good or better from what I've seen/read.

Captain InsaneO Jun 4, 2009 04:58 PM

I run 129mph on 12-13 psi. The car does just fine.

brandoz28 Jun 5, 2009 09:39 AM

a guy out here who used 275's on his car said that his hoosiers wear out much faster than mickey's

The hoosier DR's are really nice and light, hook awesome in my opinion... And your right, they wear pretty damn quick though.

So after reading this thread...

https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axl...ion-angle.html

I realized I was measuring pinion angle wrong. I thought it was pinion + ds angle = pinion angle. Turns out I had the angle set to -6:eek2:, -4 for the pinion and +2 for the driveshaft.:bang::bang:

I also reset the lcas back to the stock location. I'll post back up after I hit the track wednesday. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

MikeG Jun 10, 2009 10:52 PM

UPDATE

Well I hit the track tonight and have some new results. Managed to pull a 1.595, still spun a little though. I played with the tire pressure some, and couldn't do any better by dropping the pressure to as low as 14 PSI. I think I'm gonna pick up some DRs, the ET Streets seem to be hard to dial in on my car. I don't think I should be having this much trouble hooking at this power level. If the tires aren't the problem then I'll look elsewhere I suppose.

BlackScreaminMachine Jun 11, 2009 06:28 AM

Like said, get some line lock.

chrs1313 Jun 11, 2009 07:20 AM

you will like the MT drag radials...pulled 1.38 here with them cam only...

i would be happy with a low 1.5x 60ft SI and PT4000, so you are not too far off

omcar Jun 11, 2009 07:34 AM

How about installing a set of rear QA1s single adjustable shocks set at 4-5.
