Which gear/tire combo to go with?
Which gear/tire combo to go with? Hey all!
I posted in the MWC thread in the 'gears/axles' section, but realized I was just thread-hijacking, so I'm posting here as well.
I've been lurking through the MWC Fab-9 thread, trying to get my options together before I order the rear end!
I have an 02 SS M6 street car currently trapping 118-119 mph... hopefully trapping 122-123 mph after a few more mods. This car is roughly 70% street, 30% track. "Track" consists of drag racing only at this point, but I want to give autocross/road racing a shot too!
I'm trying to decide what gear/tire combo to go with...
I think my rev limiter is at 6800 RPM.
4.30 gears with a 26' tire puts me real close to the rev limiter in 4th gear at 122 mph, which works out pretty perfect, unless I upgrade with nitrous or something else that will push me above 125 mph...
4.11 gears top out at 128 mph with a 26" tire, which gives me wiggle room for mods before bumping to a 28" tire.
Do I give myself wiggle room with 4.11's? Or go with the 4.30's with the possibility of having to go with 28' tire if I get much faster?
Or bump to 28"/30" tires with 4.56's?
If i go with 4.56 gears, then I would be shifting into 5th if I ever race on street tires, since my 315/35/17 tires are 26" tall...

4.56 - 115.3 mph
28" tires @ 6800 RPM...
4.11 - 137.8 mph
4.30 - 131.7 mph

Which gears to go with? 3.90? 4.11? 4.30?
What size tire to go with? 26"? 28"? 30"?

I have 4.10's with 28" dr's and it's very mild for the street I'm around 2500 at 65 in overdrive. I would think being a 6 speed car if you went with 28" tires 4.30s would be very doable I wouldn't go to a 30" tire or you'll have to start modifying the wheel opening
I would say get the 4.30s and a 26" tire for now. And later down the road you can go to a 27 or 28" tire. That said, a 28" or a 27" tire will hook better than a 26". How is it hooking now?
