Default my first LS engine build...

I have been around first gen sbc's for a long time...but I am wanting to build something different for this car. I am wanting to build a LS based engine to do some bracket racing and some heads up index racing. It will be going in a 4th gen fbody. I will be the first to admit that i dont know crap about a ls engine. Here is my delimma...I am wanting to build a 6.0L out of a junkyard and build a cheap as possible engine to just get the ball rolling. I really dont know what all I need to plan on getting. I have heard talks of lq4 and l92 but I really dont know what it all means. I heard the l92 engines have square port heads that will make a much better engine. What kind of vehicle (year, model, and make) do I need to look for and how can I identify the l92 versus the lq4 engines. I know its asking alot but can anyone give me a detailed parts list on what I would need to complete the entire engine? Want to run a carb setup instead of EFI. Like I said this engine needs to be as much of a budget build as possible but I am set of a LS motor. Thanks for your input in advance guys.

Budget = LS1. But, I would get the LS3 (6.2L)/L92 heads for a basic package. You can ID the blocks by the number on driver's rear of block. On passenger front side, the displacement is usually stamped, like 6.2L. Cylinder head numbers are usually stamped on front lateral edge.
