Default What size tire for my setup?

Looking for opinions on what size drag radial I should run. My setup is as follows:

LQ4 stock bottom end, TU1 cam, 76mm turbo, stock 4L80e with an HD-2, 3500 circle D converter, 2.73 gears in the 10 bolt. The car made 606/570 on 14 lbs. The power peaked at 5700 and I am currently shifting it at 6000. However, I plan on stepping up to a 7875 turbo to make more power and help with back pressure issues. I am hoping to eclipse the 700 rwhp mark come spring time. The car weighs in around 3400 currently and the limiter will be stepped up a bit when the new turbo goes in.

With that being said, what size (26" or 28") drag radial would you run on a 15x10 wheel? I would like to run the 295/55/15 ET Street radial but am thinking that is too tall of a tire with the 2.73's, but am worried about traction off the line with a 26" tire. I will be leaving off the footbrake, and can currently build a little over 6 lbs on the street so maybe I won't need a 28" tire for traction purposes. Ideally, although not a real lofty goal, I would like to be in the 1.6's for 60's.

Eventually a 9 inch will find it's way into the car, but that will probably be a year from now. The only other option for gearing I have right now is a 3.42 10 bolt. Traction on the street is already an issue with the 2.73's, I can only imagine what it would be like with the 3.42 rear.

Just looking for some opinions on what you guys would do if you were in my shoes.

Thanks.

If you get any traction with either 10 bolt setup, then you will be swapping to a 9" sooner than you think. Or else the car will be sitting broke for the year till you projected on putting it in. My 10 bolt was making horrible noises with only 340HP applied to it so with 600 it definately break.
I would put the 9" in with 3.42-3.55 ratio and run a 26*10.5*16 et street bias ply tire .

Thanks for the response man. Unfortunately, a 9 inch is not in the cards right now. There are plenty of guys out there cutting sub 1.6 60's with a 10 bolt behind an auto. I have a another 10 bolt sitting in my garage if it does break.

I am just worried about a 28" tall tire being too much for my 2.73's that are currently in the car and if I can hook with a 26" tire.

295/55 with the 3.42 gear is the perfect setup. I would rather detune than have too small of tire

I agree that this would be the most ideal setup for me with the current options I have. However, this car is mostly a street car and will be rolling around on my 315/35/17 drag radials most of the time. I like the 2.73's for highway cruising a lot.

Will I have problems hooking at the track on a 26" Mickey? If I do go 28" will I have enough power to utilize the gearing? I have done quite a bit of searching and found a few guys running lower numerically gearing with a 28" tall tire. I know this car won't set the world on fire, and that's not what I am looking for. I just want it to run decent times at the track.

My other thought is that whatever tire I buy right now will only last me through this summer anyway. Maybe I should keep the 2.73's for now and run a 275/50/15 ET street radial this year since I have plans on a 9" in a year from now.

Thoughts?

you would be suprised that a huge number of LS turbo cars are running powerglides and 3.25 or 3.08 gears and cutting 1.4x 60's
2.73 will put a ton of heat into the trans as it will be on the converter all day. I ran a 38xx# car 6.0L turbo making about 650whp with a 80e, 3200 stall and 3.08 gears and it was faster with the 3.42. Also was just more fun to cruise with a little more gear
