Default gears and mph

Ok, assuming tracking is NOT a problem, will I pick up MPH from switch from a 3.42 to a 4.10? Obviously it'll lower my ET...
Thanks.

That's a good question, I'm not exactly sure but I would think that it would depend on your setup, generally speaking i think that it would lower your trap speeds, but once again i'm not sure, I'm interested in learning about this also.

I ask because a friend of mine added 4.10s, GMAF, and a FTRA - he picked up 2 - 2.5 mph. He's convinced that the 4.10s is what did it - not the other stuff.

[edit: oh, whoops, mph? yeah, definitely, since you're using more power]
The best way to explain is (most say a .2 or .3 gain) ... you want to be redlining in top-gear exactly at the finish line ... What you could do now is look at your speed at the end of the track. Put that through the rpm - trans.top.gear - rear gear - tire circumference and find out how many RPMs you're turning for that speed. If it's below your redline (likely), see how lower / taller you can go in the rear gears (swap in 3.42 for 3.23 in the equation, then 3.73, then 4.11) ... since you're moving closer to redline (but don't pass it), your car will be in the powerband longer (reaches high-rpms for more of the track, not just letting them be untouched by the end ...). That's how rear-gears help. But, remember, you also lose milage, and those 1st / 2nd gears last a lot less time before you've gotta shift ...
Hope this explains some ...
