Default Gearing/Tire size question....

alright, i see a lot of you guys going with some nice sized tires to compliment the lower rear end ratio. So what's the general idea of doing this? Like stepping up to a 28" tire with 4.10's compared to 26" w/ 3.73's....isn't that kind of close to the same overall gear ratio? what's the point of doing that? Thanks and sorry for the dumb question Just trying to figure out my gearing selection along with a new converter

in my mind the point is to HOOK. 2" of diameter is a good amount of contact patch on the launch. after you throw on that 28" tire to hook, you need to bring the revs back up where you want them through the traps, so you gear up. make sense?

GOT YA!!!! Thanks. I was thinking of it opposite...as in gearing up numerically to get a better launch, but then the bigger tires would negate that addition and bring the ratio down. anyways, thanks for the response.

Chris

so what do you guys think would be best..

26" tire, 3.73's, TP4400
VS.
28" tire, 4.10's, UT4600

for a bolt on car?

It depends on want you want. If it is strictly for a better ET or time, then get the best setup for that situation. However, I would advise you on this, when do make changes, understand you may have traction issues with new setup and consequently, your launch and tire pressure, etc., may change accordingly. Believe me, I have learned this the hard way. One example, when I got the 3200 vig, the only way I got traction was with Hal Shocks front and back with Nitto's. Second example, I got a H/C combo, and I got traction issues again not anticipating this, and now I am going to slicks to harness the new power. Based on my experience, ask questions with the new setup and how it affects traction issues. Hopes this helps in your decision making process. Cheers.
