Default Rear end setup

I have a 1999 Firebird
Ive been looking around at a bunch of members cars trying to get some insight into the rear suspension set up of a track car. I see plenty of guys running 15x10 with various back spacing and rear end narrowing. My ultimate goal is to run a drag radial on a 15x10 wheel with a 315 tire that is tucked in under the fender well so that i am able to lower the rear of the car as much as possible. So what would i have to do to achieve that goal? rear narrowing? Mini tubs?

the attached picture is semi-idea of what im looking for.

Here are some issues you will encounter. If you have a 9" with torque arm mount on top of the hosing and you lower the car to get the appearance you want, the torque arm will hit or be close to the driveshaft tunnel . If you are running the stock fuel tank, the housing gets close to it. I raised the back part of my tunnel 3", so I can go as low as I want, but the the fuel tank issue arises. Set your ride height at 22.5" from the rim to the fenderwell lip and check your clearances. Also, put the car on a set scales to see how the car balances.

Some info:

Here is what I did to my car.

I am only running 28" tall tires. Wanted to go taller, to close for me and not wanting to alter outer fenderwell.

Those 28" look clean though. Is your rear narrowed?

3" per side, 15x9 with 4.5 bs. No mini tub. Had to modify inner front of inside rear fenderwell.

Ahhh ive seen these pics before from other posts. I screen shot most of tthem to use as a visual reference. If my math is right a gen 4 rear is 60" flange to flange (63" hub to hub). So im looking for a 54" flange to flange housing (57" hub to hub), if i want to pull it in 3 inches per side

As much as I would love to buy a completely fabricated Midwest chassis Ford 9-inch for my f body like 60% of the people on ls1tech I'm trying to build a somewhat budget build and I really don't want to break the bank spending three or four thousand dollars on just a rear end and I still have to worry about the rest of the car. But I do understand that the rear end is what puts power to the ground so I am also trying to see if I can just don't have to shorten it and then I could cut and weld my own brackets

If you narrow 3" per side and run a 15x10 wheel with 5.5" of backspace, that will suck your wheel and tire in 1".

I have a couple moser stamped steal bare housing out in the garage, I can get the lengths for you tomorrow if you'd like. As far as all the brackets go you can get all the measurements and angles off your old rear. If you plan on doing a bunch of welding on a new housing you'll need to have it tried up before final assembly to make sure it's still straight. Talk to some dirt track guys near you they'll know where to take the rear for trying.

I like that tucked look and the general consensus is 3 in narrowed per side amd 5.5 bs tucks it nicely. Has anyone done 15x10 6in bs? Or is that sucked in too much?

I have a 295/55/15 tucked nicely.

MWC fab 9"
Shortened 3" per side
5.5 BS

Making your own fabricated 9" sounds like a lofty goal.
