Default Another one bites the dust...

Tranny that is...

It died on my 3rd time trial pass last night at Gainesville. When it launched, it started to move, and the front end just dropped back down like a brick and the car stopped dead in it's tracks. We had a tough time pushing the car out of the lanes.

Looks like the planetary exploded. So much for the theory that a 1.82 planetary wouldn't be a weak link in my car...

I'm pulling the tranny out today, and with some luck will have a 1.76 1st planetary installed in it tomorrow. Hopefully it didn't do any additional damage.

I'm going to try and have it running again by Wednesday, but should definitely be racing again next weekend.

Wow - I have never read about someone having so much bad luck with trannies. That 1.82 was first in the 'glide, right? I thought those things were supposed to be atomic.

Good luck - hope you're running soon.

I thought glides were indestructable.

The 1.82 1st planetaries are known for being weak. We didn't think it would be a problem in a low 10 second car though. I know of quite a few mid-low 9 sec. cars with the same planetary.

The 1.76 should hold up well.

I've found out recently that nothing is indestructable when it comes to me!

George, before you do anything, check out Transmission Specialties 1.80 straight cut gear set. Pro mods making 2200 hp couldn't break one last year. They had 0 failures for all of 2001.

Man that's a bummer George. But I got to tell you buddy, You sure don't waste any time fixin' things up Good luck George.

Question for you. How would a 1.92 first gear hold up? If I went to a power glide I was considering a 1.92 1st gear.

Sorry to hear that George. Its sad but a GOOD glide that can take the abuse of the hp like you're putting down, will really set you back some serious coin.

www.mikestransmission.com
www.transmission-specialties.com

I nearly went with a glide so I wouldn't have to worrry about the 1-2 shift coming up so fast, and possibly be easier to put the power to the ground at the line, however at my weight, and on the Nitrous pretty heavy it was decided it was more beneficial and almost necessary to go to use the TH400.

Good luck!

Kurtis

Tom the one thing to keep in mind is the difference between 1st and 2nd gear. Upon shifting from an even lower 1st gear set, you are then going all the way down to a 1:1. It can get you out of your rpm band, and even worse Lug the engine. In extreme cases cause detonation (mostly Nitrous Applications).

Ditto on what Kurtis said. The 1.92 1st would be a little more of an rpm drop on the 1-2 shift. I've already proven (to myself anyway) that I don't need the extra gear. I let the converter launch the car.

I know I could "bulletproof" the 'glide to take whatever I wanted to throw at it, but right now my wallet has too many "bullet holes" in it. I think a stock 1.76 planetary will hold up well enough. Maybe when it comes freshen-up time I'll stick in a $600 HD planetary.

The tranny should be fixed tomorrow. I'm going to stick some weight in the car and get up to 3200lbs. and start doing some testing to get ready for the Thunder Shootout.

If the slip-n-slide breaks again or is worse than you thought, will you go to a 400 next? With more than 2800 lb. I don't like the glide much, but that's just me. Anyway, you're bound to go "high dollar" in the long run, if not a 400 from the looks of things. Because breakage SUCKS!

If I break this 'glide again, then I'll probably have to step up and invest in an aftermarket planetary. Right now I just don't have the $600+ to spend on one.

We weren't able to locate a stock 1.76 planetary, so we had to put another 1.82 back in it. The guys that are building the tranny's have had good luck over the years with the 1.82, even though there is no doubt it is weaker than the 1.76. Since these things are getting hard to find, sometimes you have to take what you can get if you can't lay out the $$$ for the aftermarket stuff.

I think this one should at least get me through the Thunder Shootout without failing. Who knows though, it could break on the 1st pass down the track, or stay together for 250 passes.

The tranny was completely locked up and wouldn't roll in reverse. I even tried to drag it off with the 4-wheeler. I had to yank the driveshaft out of it just to roll it off the trailer into the garage.

Sorry to hear about your trans problems.

When you can, you need to get a glide with a pro brake to run in Super Street.

Hell, What do I know? Iam going to try and run Super Street next year with a M6.

Good Luck on the new trans.

No pro-brake needed... I can go red on a .500 sportsman tree with over 1.000 seconds delay in the box.

Meaning, I'll have to dial in a little bit of delay for the .500 pro tree in S/ST.
