Default Question on Nitto drag radials

I've heard these are really good at the strip but I wanted to know if there's a good drag radial that people run everyday that handle well. Is there such an animal or do most people have dedicated rims and drag radials for the strip?

The 555Rs actually handle really well on the street. I ran them for years no problem and guys where actually using them for road racing and auto-x up until acouple of years ago. Nitto now has the 555RII which is exactly the same as a 555R except that it has a stiffer side wall for road racing.

How much better 60's should i get from going from 315 radials (sumitumo) to 315 nittos. How much from nittos to bfg's...just trying to pick my next tire. I'll actually have a rear that can handle it by then.

Hard to say since every car is different. I cut a 1.60 with only half decent prep using a 315/35/17 555R on a 9.5" wheel, I actually spun the wheel in the tire alittle that day. The new BFGs are great and the new M/Ts kick *** but, you don't want to get caught in the rain with either of those. On Wen night with the M/Ts I was cutting 1.50s and 1.60s with no real track prep, usually at street night with the Nittos I would be in the 1.80s or 1.90s.

nittos are great for street driving, but you can't really 60ft' all that well with them. i'd say MOST people will not be able to get better than a 1.7X 60 ft on nitto's, my best was 1.80. they don't suck at the track, but they ARE the least grippy drag radial (which is still waaaaay stickier than any street tire). you cannot flash the converter or dump the clutch because they will go up in smoke with anything but a stock stall.

i will be buying another set, my last ones lasted me a full 8000 miles, doing 5 second burnouts every time i raced to heat them up (they won't really stick unless they are HOT!). i'd say on average i did 10 burnouts per 300 miles. i raced the car at least 1 night a week, maybe 3 to 10 runs in that night, depending on who was out (street), usually more than one night a week and they still lasted that long.

With my 275/17s I cut a best 1.69 on the Nittos. Just beware, once they start getting bald, they suck in the rain. With about 30 strip passes (big burnouts each time) and around 6k miles on them (with plenty of unsanctioned street performance comparisons) mine are within a couple thousand miles or 1-2 drag strip trips away from being shot.

I like my Nittos. 1.64 with a 6 spd and 4.30 gears on 315x35x17 Nittos and a 1.67 on 245x50x16 Nittos.

I LOVE my nittos as an everyday street tire, but I run ET streets at the track. I'm sure the nittos could put down decent numbers, and I plan to try them whenever I get back to the track to see how they compare, but I doubt they'd stick as well as the ET streets. Maybe if I had spent any money at all on my suspension, it'd be a different story. As my car sits I don't see nittos pulling consistent 1.64 60's.

I used nittos the last 2 seasons and they were certainly an improvement on street tires. If you want and expect a slick, get a slick. But Nitto is a excellent compromise for street and strip.
