Default How much more traction expected at track??

Hi I was thinking of hitting the track soon just to base line my car. I have a set of 275 60 R15 BFG radail TAs on my Chevelle. They were a free set to me. they are around 10" wide and new. Took the car out last night and heated them up a little. then thought I would mash the peddle down from a stop. welp they spin just as good as the little tires I used to have. Best guess, they spun through 1st and 2nd. mabe 40 or 50 yds.
I have never ran at the track and want to know if it will be not worth it to go up their without DRS or slicks. Can you guys give me an idea of how much more traction I could expect to have at the track?
can some one give me an idea how I should try to launch. My sig. has my set up. THANKS A LOT!

Well I don't know how you would expect to get traction mashing it from a stop on regular radials, it's just not gonna happen with a car with power. If ur gonna go up on the radials, the track is definately gonna have more bite, but if you expect to hook and get a decent time ur gonna have to kind of roll into it off the line and ease ur way up too full throttle in first or ur just gonna blow them off! On the street on street tires I can't catch traction at any point in first gear at all, but the couple times I was just messin around on my street tires at the strip, I could roll into her and slowly get to full throttle and not just mash it cuz if I mash it the stall is gonna flash and kill the tires and she'll usually hook it in first.

You also have to remember that suspension comes into play A LOT when going for maximum traction and a good 60 foot time. My Nova has cut 1.71 60 foots on standard issue 275/60/15 generic non-drag radials (and BTW they are about 8.9" of tread width, where-as a 275/50/15 is 10" tread width) but that's because the car is set-up to transfer weight well. The best on my 9" M/T ET Streets is a 1.57 60 foot, so that gives you a good idea of the difference between "rolling the throttle" on radials and mashing the gas for a dead-hook on slicks/ET Streets.
IMHO, (I can see the flaming now) BFG's drag radials are junk unless you have a suspension and sometimes trans/gear/motor set-up to allow the car to launch where the tires will hook up well. Don't forget that drag radials usually don't have as flexible a sidewall as et streets or slicks (going in order of flexability). A car like a 72 Chevelle will need that to hook well. I had a 72 Chevelle with a very mild 350, turbo 350 trans with 2800 stall 11" convertor and 3.55 gears pull 1.82 60 foot times and run mid 13s at 100 mph over 10 years ago, and if I can scan pictures of it launching on 26 x 8.5 ET Drag slicks you'll see the sidewalls were wrinkling up good.

Hope this helps out somewhat.

Derek

thanks Derek and Devon, I stated the mashing gas peddle to give a idea of what type of traction I get now. I have read lots of posts hear and see lots of people talking of lanching their cars at 4000 RPM or more. And some autos that spin just a little. A popular converter is 4000 rpm i am not sure how you roll the peddle with that much stall.
I am new to racing and not to sure of best launch or rolling the peddle. I am not sure if the track surface will help my tires hook up better.
I am running a 4:11 and 28" tires. I am nut sure if a better gear would be a 3:50 or so. I did the math, I think it said at around 120mph the thing will shift out of third with 4:10s All help is gladly accepted. thanks
