Default ???'s about tire size vs MPH

I have searched some and still havent quite found what I was looking for...

I know that a 28" tire will hook better thatn a 26" tire... But which tire will net a higher MPH? And does the size affect the ET at all?

It's also relative to the amount of hp as well. Some cars (mine is one lol ) don't have enough power to turn over a 28" tall tire. So it may "hook" better but after that it will fall on it's face and won't muster the same mph as with a 26" tire. Also lets say you have a 3.42 gear with a 26" tire, then you switch to a 28" tire. You are effectively reducing your gear ratio. So in drag you want more acceleration than top end. My philosphy(sp?) is that I want to go with the smallest tire (quicker acceleration) possible that would still allow me to get through the traps just over peak power. Hope this helps. -Mark

Let me make a generalized blanket statement: If you can hook on a shorter tire, you are probably going to run quicker and faster.

A taller tire effectively reduces your gearing causing you build RPM a little slower and go through the traps at a lower RPM. I have done back to back runs on the same day swapping tires from a shorter size to a taller size. As long as the shorter tires were able to hook, they would allow my car to run a bit quicker and trap a bit faster.

Any size suggestions for my application?

Next Summer I will be as follows:
LT headers
True Duals
TSP Magic Stick v.3
Stock Heads
LS6 intake
Moser 12 Bolt w/3.73's
QA1's on all corners
Wolfe Drag Race swaybar
3800-4000 stall
TNT 150 Shot
Race weight of about 3300
15" wheels

I don't know too much about GM's but if that looks like a bigger than norm stall and you're spraying a 150, and have 3.73's. I don't know if your car will make it down the strip on a 26" tire. I'm guessing you would need 28x10x15 or even 28x11.5x15's. Nitrous gives torque so you'll have plenty of power to turn those monsters over. -Mark

I went from an M6 and a 26" tire to a TH350 and a 28" tire. Off the footbrake at 1800 rpm launch I went 119+. With a good launch I would say there will either be no differencein MPH or I will pick up speed.
