What gauge wire to go from alternator to kill switch?

What gauge wire to go from alternator to kill switch? I ran 6 gauge from alternator to kill switch and obviously it's not enough cuz it is barely charging the battery and the voltmeter is sitting at the top of the red. Took the wire off that I ran and put the stock wire back on and bingo, she's back to normal, so it's definately the wire being too small, would 4 gauge be good or do I need 2 gauge like the rest of the wires I used in the relocation?
