Default Vacuum pump problems--race car guys inside please...

I tried running my vacuum pump setup on my car earlier this year and ran into some problems. I have everything, moroso 3-vane, sheetmetal v/c (with baffle),
breather tank, and regulator.

Everytime I hook up the pump---It starts sucking all of the oil out of the v/c . No matter how much crap I shove down into the baffle (steel wool, etc)-it sucks so much oil out of the head that it fills the breather tank. I checked the vacuum---only showing 4 in/hg on a boost guage I had lying around.

The nipple for the guage and regulator are located on the driver valve cover, but the pump sucks from the passenger side. Could I be getting a false reading from the driver v/c? I have an ls1 block, so I'm a little worried about the bay-to-bay breathing in the motor.

My motor is not setup "loose" in the rings by any means. A local machine shop that does all of the local "dealer" ls1's did the shortblock a couple years back. A few friends that are into racing have said "it must not need it"-about the pump on my motor. I find it hard to believe that @ 4 in/hg it is sucking all of the oil out, no matter how my rings are setup.

Any help would be much appreciated

4 in.Hg is the max vacuum that I witnessed on the guage. I drove the car around on the street and got on it a couple of times. 4 was the most I saw @ around 4k rpms, it might have creeped to 6 or 7in by 7000 rpm--I was having trouble reading the guage b/c the car is all over the road on the street.

I am having the same problem. Are you running the Moroso pressure relief valve also. The one that has shims in it. I tried it with all the shims and I also tried it with no shims at all, just open to the atmosphere. I can't get mine to stop sucking *** loads of oil. On the other hand it is not sucking very much because it is not showing on my dipstick tube. When I drain it there is not full. I need some help on this subject also.

Where are you guys tapping in the suction line at? Don't put it on top of the valve cover, or you will suck in nothing but oil. Sounds like you guys also have some leaks somewhere. My Aerospace 3 vane pulls up to 12.5". That's where I have the relief valve set.

so your saying you have a baffle over the hole in the valve cover that the line connects too? where is that fitting located on the valve cover? where is your regulator mounted and what brand it is? at idle you should be able to just raise the rpms up to maybe 3-4k and the vacuum should keep rising...past 4in.

hyd roller motors are much harder to keep from pulling a lot of oil...but yours seems excessive. i have solid roller in my stang and restricted oiling to the rockers and i only empty my tank once-twice a season....and its usually just condensation in there. my friend that has a hyd roller has to empty his after every pass. BUT, he has his configured a little differently than mine...which could be half the problem.

This is what I would say as well. If you're only seeing 4 In. Hg. at idle you've either got a blown-up engine or you've got a vacume leak somewhere. Don't be afraid to apply silicone liberally.
