Default stupid question but Im new

OK so I am not too experienced at drag racing. Last time I went out I ran a best of a 13.73 at 103mph. I have seen magazine articles where these cars ran low 13's. What am I doing wrong? My 99 'hawk is bone stock and I am shifting at 6K. The reaction time for that run was .282 but it felt like it bogged down. I really need the help of experienced racers with these cars I dont want to look bad in front of these freakin imports that are there!

Is your car a stick? I hope it is becasue you say you are shifting. Also I dont know what kind of setup you track is but where I go they have a test and tune night which is drag racing without the bracket racing aspect. If its not bracket racing your reaction time shouldnt matter but I always like to practice it any ways. Also there is always the free mods.

My car is an ls1/6 speed car, completely stock. The complete breakdown for the run was: R/T: .282
60ft:2.238
1/8th:9.020
1000:11.574
1/4 13.730 @103.52
I run at No Problem Raceway in Donaldson, Louisiana. I want to get the best baseline time that I can achieve before I start modifying the car. So the question is still: how do you guys run fast when your car is stock? What rpm do I launch at?

p.s. thanks for putting up with stupid questions, I gotta learn some way...right?

Are you doing a big enough burnout? Maybe you should lower your launch rpm. Id say start at like 1500 and work your way up.

Ditto on getting your 60' time down. Get it under 2.1 and with your trap speed you should be cutting 13.2 -13.3 ET's.
Also get your tire pressure down in the rear for better bite, stock tires around 20 psi or get some drag radials and you could see 13.0 or maybe high 12's.
Good luck!

ET is in the 60

Get your 60 down and you will get the time down. Every .1 in the 60 is roughly about .2 in the 1/4

What tires are you running?
What Tire pressure are you running?
Do you take your foot off the gas during shifts?
How do you launch?

Practice will get your times down. These cars are 12 sec capable in stock trim with the right driver.

The tires I used are kumho escata supra, 275 40 17's I brought tire pressure down to 23lbs in the rear 40 in the front. I let off the gas during my shifts which are around 57-6k rpms, but my shifts are pretty fast. I dont bother doing much of a burn out, I just dump it and let it go forward, I dont sit there and smoke them. So what should I be doing differently?

No reason to do a burn out with street tires. The tire pressure is probably good. Work on hooking the launch. I normally dump the clutch @ 1700rpm and floor it. Consistantly got 2.0 60' times with street tires. I try to keep my foot into it while shifting so I do not go too low in the rpm's between shifts. The 103 mph is low. Have you had your car on they Dyno? Your car could be low on HP, and that could be an issue. More than likely you just need practice.

Agreed...get your 60 ft. times down, and don't waste your time doing burnouts on street tires. They just make the street tires greasy.

Practice different techniques...see how much rpm the car will hold on the line and still stick at launch.

Your reaction time has zero effect on your e.t. Reaction times become much more important in competion, so if you're just looking to get a good e.t. don't let a bad reaction time bother you. You'll probably get hooked on drag racing like most of us already have, and will concentrate on improving all aspects of your runs as time passes.

Also run with as little gas as necessary....a 1/4 tank is probably ideal. The more gas you have in the tank, the more weight you have to haul down the track.

I would say 23 is too low on street tires.
But that's just my opinion I guess...definatley try it at different pressures though.

A4 here, but I'd say traction, traction, traction! That's what you need.
Beg, borrow, or steal some drag radials...well, I guess you could buy some, as well(just a thought )...lower the pressure to 18 lbs or so...heat 'em up with about a 10 second burnout...pressure up the fronts to about 45 lbs...1/4 tank of gas...take EVERYTHING out of the car that's permissable, except yours truly of course(and your **** magazines...can't be without those),...unrestrictive air intake would be nice...leave on the third yellow...keep your foot in it(as long as it stays straight, and you don't miss a gear that is)...make sure that your a/c is off...windows up...and if you couldn't find any DR's, go around the water box. JMHO.
Like others have said...get the 60ft down.
