Default Cage install prices?

I've decided I am going with a jegs 10pt cage for my 96' S10. I know it's not a F Body and the labor is different. But, whats the typical rate for a cage install?

And can anyone recommend someone in the Western Ohio area? I am familar with Richmond Performance in Richmond Indiana, they do good work, but just curious as to who else is out there.

Also, would it be worth it to step up to a 12pt cage instead? Eventually the truck will hopefully see high 9's but thats far down the road..

Thanks
Brian

for a full 10-pt cage???

That is about what a 6-pt can be done for around here

A rollcage is quite a bit more involved

Yes for a full ten point. Take a few things into consideration...

1. Most people strip their cars in prep to lower the price. Most that is.

2. If you are paying more than 300 for a 6 point, someone is getting hosed. I can see 400+ if you live in the city and the cost of living is more expensive... i guess i need to take that into consideration. The addition of the halo and such generally goes into the 600's. But with the simplicity of the square S-10 interior, the work can be performed much faster. I would look for the price to be cheaper... like i said, in the 500's. Just my experience.

Have you seen the cost of 4130 tube lately??

$100 a point in chromoly is about right, bent to fit the chassis.

How far south in Ohio are you?

Stenod Performance (sponsor ---->) is about an hour north of Toledo if you're close. You'd have to talk to Joe for actually pricing, depending on mild versus chromoly, etc. But it should be close to $100 a point if memory serves.

also depends if you are going with a TIG welded cage. you have to spend alot more time fitting it together to get a good weld. A MIG'ed cage is much quicker but can't do that with chromemoly

very true. And i guess it also depends on the quality of the cage that is bought. does it need to be adjusted / trimmed / notched??? I have always bought Wolfe stuff down here in texas. It spoils the chassis shops. There might be a better quality cage out there, but i have not run across one yet.

but dang, i do feel fortunate for the local cost of living i guess.

Outlaw Chassis built me a custom 6pt cage (Big tall guy that need the leg room). The whole thing including removal and replacement of the interior, trimming the carpet to fight...100% pro job. Set me back $750. He would of done chromemoly for $1000, but I was too stupid to pay the extra!!!

One size fit all rollcages are fine if your 5'8" and weigh 165lbs. In an Fbody, if your tall or big...or both like me, don't buy a cookie cutter rollbar or cage. You will regret it.

HMMM looking at a WOLFE 6-point in Chromoly....

I know of a local shop that does a lot of welding for a bunch of local race cars. Might give them a call and ask about labor.

I paid something like $400.00 to have my Wolfe chromoly 10 point installed at a local race shop here down south. That was the cheapest price I found though. On average other shops were wanting about $1000. I think the $100 a point is pretty accurate.

Talk to the guys at Stenod performance. (www.stenodperformance.com)

They built a 12pt cage out of chromoly tubing from scratch for my '98 S-10, and they did an awesome job!! Talk to Joe and see... in my opinion their price was awesome as well!

you won't be dissapointed.

Where did you get your cage installed, $400 for a 10pt.? Is that a 'buddy' price or where you just another customer? That is mighty cheap, please let me know the place that did your work.

thanks.

Well I asked the head of my school (aviation maintenance) about another instructor who builds hot rods from the ground up (builds the frames from scratch) and he said he cold TIG weld but out composites instructor is the best guy that he knows to do it. I asked him if he would trust his welding to save a life and he said yes.

Found out there is a guy at my work who used to do a lot of TIG welding and the guy who I asked said he would trust his life with this guys welding.

Also had more then one person recomend a local welding shop so I have plenty of options. I am going to call my instructor here soon.

I will just gut the interior minus the driver seat and let them weld it in and then put the race carpet in myself. If my instructor can give me a good enough deal I might just go 10 point... even though I will not need it for now.

seeing these prices definetly makes the price i got a little easier to swallow, i can understand why they get so much though .
i was quoted just under 1g for a full custom built 6point chrome-moly with removable door bars.

Exclamation

Later upgrades should be taken into consideration up front.
IE: A 6 pt bar HAS to be 1 3/4" tube. But, a cage can be 1 5/8" tube.
So it's a bar for now, and then you find a cage is required later. It now becomes a "bastard child".. A 1 3/4" cage. It's heavier, doesn't look right, could affect a future buyer's decision. A mix/match of tubing could also get you into a "discussion" w/ the cert inspector, as any car, who's et/speed requires such, also has to be certified.
