Default Anyone using a spool on the street?

Thinking about getting a spool for my 12 bolt so I can leave harder, but I street drive my car more than anything. I only go to the track a handful of times each summer, and the car always has drag radial on it. I don't daily drive it either though, maybe a few thousand miles a year. How rough is it on the street with a spool? I run 325/50/15 MT's, or 315/35/17 BFG dr's.

i drove for about 2 years with a spool and no power steering (stock rack looped) and it sucked but i got used to it. but, like Slow Z28 said, forget about pushing it if you have to make a turn. get out the jack!!!

Not very fun with a close ratio stick shifted tranny and gears of 4.11 or higher. Feels like you have the brakes on when backing out of a parking space, or parking in one. Also ***** the rear axle to one side in turning slowly as in slowly releasing the clutch to roll of of a stop at a corner. It wears out your tires and may eventually break axles. Those things aside, no real big deal. The only place I usually pushed my car was at the track. Ironically, that's where the spool is meant to be used.

If you're broke, it can get you going. That's why I did it. I broke my stock 9 inch posi (spiders) and had no money to purchase another posi. worked for a little while till I couldnt stand it any more... and had more cash.

If your car is more street than track and you only go to the track a handful of times a season. A spool is not for you. You won't be happy.

I have been driving mine for 6 months or so and actually it doesn't bother me. I only notice it when taking a sharp turn in a parking lot or backing out of a parking space and it barks the tires turning

Run a spool and it isn't that bad after you accept the fact that it will eat tires like you wouldn't believe. Dont coner to hard in the rain or you WILL LOSE IT!!!!!

With an auto car a spool is fine, but it becomes a bit more of a pain in the *** with a manual car. It makes turning sharp a bitch especially when trying to park or maneuver in tight spots. And you have to be sure you don't drive in the rain much at all if you go with the spool..

Spools are many times stronger, there are no moving parts, the axles are locked in relationship to each other. A very good thing when you leave on the rear tires, it's very hard to steer with the fronts in the air.

We do not recommend them for street cars. Especially if it's not running 9's or faster. The new posi's are really strong compared to when I started.

I dont DD mine but I have had it on the street, with wet streets, on m/t radials, its not that bad, just gotta drive careful and get used to the rear tires getting ate up.

remember the more traction (say you have a set of 325 m/t radials) the more they will get chewed up.

in my experience,

with 28" slicks, you barley notice it at all.

with 26-28" drag radials. you notice them a bit, mostly during really slow turns, like turning into your driveway or backing out of a parking space.

with low profile tires like 275-40-17's it is almost unbearable!
