What kind of gas do you have to use when welding cromoly? I heard somewhere you can use straight argon, is this true?

I dont know how true this is. But will throw it out there. But I was going to use co2 to tig with. I have been welding a bunch of mild steel. but the guy at the gas shop says, U cannot use anything but argon with a tig welder. He says the argon is actually used for the TIG process. If this is true or not I dont know. But I can run the welder though. lol

You can use other gases for tig, but not for what he is wanting to do. You can not use C02 though, or even a C02/Argon blend. You will have severe tungsten errosion. You can use a argon/helium blend if you want a really hot burn. But I have only seen this done, in automated tig processes on large work pieces.
