Re: what size skinnies?
I don't think there's anything that will be exact, but you do have a few choices.
The least expensive route is to use the popular 165/R15 metric radials (VW Beetle tires), expecially if you're still running radial tires on the rear (mixing a radial and bias-ply tire can cause some strange handling side effects). The 165/R15's are going to be a little shorter than a stock tire, but not a terrible amount.
Another choice would be a Mickey Thompson Sportsman front (26x7.5x15), which will actually be a little taller than the stock front tires... They also have an 8-ply version of this tire, which is designed for heavier cars. The 8-ply version is a good idea on a "full weight" car, since you'd have much better support from the stiffer sidewall. The 8-ply is a little heavier, but it's a pretty insignificant difference.

Re: what size skinnies?
thanks george,
isn't the 7.5 tire a bit wide for a 3.5 wide rim??
what would the m't sportsman size come up to in terms of metric size?

Re: what size skinnies?
The 165r15 tires are very close in height to the stock tires, as George said. I pondered on the decision to go with Hoosier 26's, or the 165r15. But for $29 a piece for the 165's, versus the $160 or so or the Hoosiers, it was no contest. I have been very happy with the decision to run the 165's. Handling at the big end is not bad at all, considering I'm running 27 x 11.5 QTPs in the back.
