Default Workin the Box

Hey guys,

you can see my setup below, I think the only thing missing is my new M/T E/T Streets

I don't think I'll get to the track this summer, but I've been helping out at a lot of track rentals this year.

I was wondering about warming up the tires for the E/T streets...most guys roll through the water, even though you probably want to spin the tires in the water once?

How long should I smoke the tires for before I'm ready to pull up to the tree?

some guys go John Force, others just smoke 'em real quick and go

leave it in 1st?

I have an A4 and seemed to do better driving around the water box.

Going "John Force" is overkill. Heating them up too much will cause them to blister and not adhere. Optimum temp is right around 200 degrees. Without someone chiming in and actually stating what they've found to work for them using those specific tires, I'd recommend having a friend come with you to test and tune, light 'em up and have him hit them with a pyro just as you roll back. Record your temps in your racing log (you DO have a log?) and just vary the burnout time a little each time until you have a burnout that gives you the right temp for the best 60'.

First, don't ever spin the tires in the water. That just throws excess water in the wheel well that drips down on the tire as your staging. Stop just past the edge of the water. Tire temps vary with each car and tire type. Have someone with a temp gun shoot the tread temp just before you prestage. Record this and do some testing to see what the car likes.

Best advice here IMHO. I won't spin my ET Street radials over in the box to avoid getting water in the treads or getting it in the wheelhouses. If you can get someone to help out on temp checks, do it. Keep track of the time it takes for you to get to each temperature (I count 1-Mississippi, 2 etc. as I'm in the box). Keep in mind your burnouts may need to be a little longer in colder temps and shorter in warmer summer temps as the tire temp will be colder/warmer even before you hit the burnout box.

A burnout for me in either car is about the same: I'll burn them until I feel the motor start to pull the rpms down then release the brake and keep the revs up as I come out of the box to make sure I don't track any water up. The burnout in the Formula takes about 2-3 seconds and the Nova is 3-4 seconds on ET Street radials, 4-5 seconds on slicks.

If your track will allow you to drive around the water, do it to avoid tracking water, especially if you are running stock-sized wide front tires. I drive through the box as my track doesn't have enough area to avoid the water. Just make sure you study the lane and line yourself up with the tire tracks in the lane before entering the burnout box if you can.

First, I agree with PROMOD, never sit in the middle of the box. Street radials are tuff to heat up. I could never get BFgood g forces to heat up but GFG drag radials are like butter and definately hook up. But they will not last long on a daily driver.

I'm not sure if I can get the tires to smoke in 3 seconds...I'll have to give it a try. Like I said, I haven't run my setup at all this year...and might not get a chance to

I usually just look in the mirror and when I see smoke I roll out of it.

I can drive around the water, but in the past I've just driven through it.....so I don't need any water at all?

I'll have to borrow my friends pyrometer and start watching temps

thanks guys

i think you have up to 7 seconds in the waterbox. Driving through the box sucks if you have wide front tires. Thats why I like to burn & run out of the box. Though you could always back into the box. Sometimes it dosent make a difference, especially when other racers have ac condensate dripping all over the staging lane. I hate that ****!

I don't really have to worry about the time spent in the box. I really only go to the track when my local shop rents it out. I hate test 'n' tunes because you always sit in the lanes all night and get 2 passes

I'm running stock front tires, i don't see it really effecting me going down the track since they are regular tires, and most of the water would dry off by time i got to the tree.

no a/c condensation either, everybody at the track rentals know what their doing

now i just have to figure out how to launch this hoss consistantly lol
