Default TH400 overkill?

I am building up my car to be a street-legal, emissions-legal car, and looking into what transmission to go with. The car is not going to make more than 500rwhp, but will be focused in more suspension and other parts to make it go fast. It has a tired 4L60E in it now, and was wondering if swapping to a TH350 or TH400 was overkill. I can get one built VERY cheap, but wondering if money would be better spent rebuilding and beefing up the 60E. Any input on this?

Btw, gas mileage, drivability, etc. doesn't matter.

it would run faster with a th350, and if you only plan on 500 rwhp that should hold up fine built right.

How much difference would I see in a build 60E compared to a 350 ET wise?

There are a lot of variables to consider. TH350 has a 2.52 1st gear and a 4l60e has a 3.06

The 4l60e has more mass so it'll rob more power.

The TH350 is lighter.

The 4l60e has an overdrive.

If it is a dedicated car you want to race and cruise on the street I'd go with the TH350, if you plan to drive it often I would upgrade the 4l60e.

If it is a dedicated race car all out I would run a TH400 or Power glide if you start wanting to go over the 600-700 hp range.

Other things to consider will you have to change the length of your drive shaft, relocated the torque arm mount?

I think it depends on the weight of the car and converter, I think a heavy car with less converter will go faster with the 4l60e, some gear and converter and a car that is in the low 3000 range will go faster with a th350.

I loved my TH400 , 250 shot off the trans brake for 3 years without a single failure and street driven too.

Seems like it'll cost just as much though to swap over as it is to build up the 60E. Priced out everything (transmission, converter, crossmember and TA relocation kit, tune, trans cooler, and dipstick) and came out to just over $1300. I live down the street from Neal Racing Transmissions and they quoted me $950 for a BUILT 60E with a 3000 converter..
