On an 8.5 I would believe it. Low 9's on a 7.5/7.6 I couldnt see lasting more than a few runs. If you are running low 9's you arent leaving easy. 8.5 10 bolts in GN's and early Camaros have gone single digit when built up pretty regular.

i dont understand the REAL point i know theres the little things like weight BLAH BLAH but in my head your gonna spend a huge chunk of change on the parts to make it hopefully hold and if/when it breaks you can either keep dishing out money to fix it or go buy a 9-12 but if you chose that route then you ended up spending twice as much and ended up with a 9-12. plus how fun it it to worry every time you hit the gas if the rears gonna blow up. i have seen pinion s go thew housing and land in the back seat before. not worth it. plus if you got the 9-12 you can not worry add some more power and go faster.... my .02

well first thing is to keep 3.42 3.23 or 2.73 in it to keep the ring and pinion alive...next is to weld the tubes and get some moser axles... i cant keep from braking axles...local guy in the same boat he got axles and his car leacing on a 150 shot cuts 1.38 60' and has lived...i decited not to put money into this thing...so im gettin a new rear
I for one, agree. I wish someone could build a bulletproof 10 bolt. if not, at leats one that weighs as much as a 10 bolt and has as little rotating mass as a 10 bolt.
Why?
For people like me that like to both drag race and road race the car. I want a differential that is optimum for both applications.
For launching with slicks, my 12 bolt holds up (even though Ive never broke my 10 bolt before I swapped it out) and even with the 12 bolt I get wheelhop once in a while, which I hate.
worse is road racing, the car handles like crap with teh 12bolt and Im very disappointed.
Maybe Ill come up with the "perfect rear end" one day.
til then, I will stay bitter/ because we can never have an all around "best" diff.

I've done multiple 1.50 60fts with my stock series 2 Auburn 10 bolt. The only mods are 3.73 gears, and TA girdle.. My car is 3250 race weight and is an A4 with a 4000 stall also..

No rear end is completely bulletproof. You can break any of them for a multitude of reasons. That being said, you can absolutely build a 10-bolt to take some abuse. Mine went 1.51-1.53 60' times for 6 years in a 3,600+ lb car with no issues. The only thing I had to do was fluid changes.
Using quality components and the right setup is absolutely paramount. Aside from a good gear set and differential, a solid pinion spacer and bearing cap studs are the best (and most often overlooked) cheap insurance you can buy. I cannot stress enough how important the setup is though.
