Default Rocker question

I have Earson NSA 1.7 aluminum rockers. Valve covers had not peen pulled in at least 10 years since I bought the car last season.

I had one rocker work its way loose with the nut backing off and came completley off. Get to gl looking for the lifter now.... yaaa!!!

All the rockers have quite a bit of movement in them up and down and left to right. Is this normal?

Anyone know what the rockers should be torqued to? BBC if that matters.

I am going to double check them all.

Thanks.

BBC rockers arent torqued, stock they have friction locking nuts and you have to set preload (or lash if solid cam) on each one.

Aftermarket rockers usually have an internal jam nut in the adjuster, you set the lash/preload and tighten the set screw in the center. Its pretty common for those to come loose, especially if the rocker stud isnt machined flat on top. Only rockers that are torqued are jesel type shaft rockers where the adjuster is on the pushrod end.

Thanks Kp, do you know what the preload ussualy is?

I should know later today if its a solid roller when I find the missing lifter.

Depends, stock type hydraulic the old 1 turn at zero lash should be fine. Rhodes and some other need different preloads. You can always check one or two of the ones that are on and see where they are at.

If it has roller lifters its most likely mechanical, dont see a lot of BBC hydraulic rollers unless is newer. But if its a mechanical roller lifter its hard to pop just one lifter out since they are usually linked together somehow per cylinder. Most likely a regular flat tappet mechaincal or hydraulic if one lifter is missing.
