Default Bracket racers inside (cooling question)

The heat is starting off pretty strong around here already...95* and I was wondering how you bracket racers keep your auto tranny cool? I'm running a 5100 stall non-lockup converter and 2 B&M 24,000 GVW coolers in series mounted under the car in direct air path. My temp gauge pegs at 250* quickly and takes forever to cool off sitting. I took it on a trip on the HWY to see if the airflow would cool it off and on a 10 mile trip the temp never came down. I guess the gauge could be off, but I seriously doubt it. I will double check it with a infrared thermometer this weekend.

I'm thinking on going with a single cooler with a fan that turns on around 170*, but that would only work while the car was running so the fluid is being pumped through the cooler. How do you cool off the tranny between rounds? Any tricks? Any help would be appreciated!

I have seen some trick set ups that have a separate pump that have fittings plumbed into pan with a cooler with fan on it so they could cool what fluid was in the pan between rounds this was a few years ago also this was a race only set up.

Where is the temp gauge plumbed in, the pan or inline?

My Nova never gets above 180 on the gauge in pan on a TH400 with a 3800 stall 10" even lapping it 5 minutes between rounds.

All I can think of is a fan (as mentioned), running a bigger single cooler as far away from any other source of heat as possible in good airflow, or you can spray the cooler down between rounds with water and/or nitrous.

Yeah something isn't right. We run 185-187 in all conditions except going down the track and even then it's 191-195*. We run a 160* thermostat and the fans are set 190/180.

We also have a 6.0 iron block that doesn't disipate heat very well. Make sure your fans are coming on as programmed. I had a relay go bad once that s/d one of the fans and it ran much hotter than normal.

Engine temp is critical to being able to run the number.

G/L and Keep us posted.

Water cooled trans cooler. I really like this one, you can use engine water, or if you want it really cool an ice water setup.

As said above. Something is not right. Here in Texas 95+ summer heat I can run 5 laps in 20 minutes and have no problem with tranny temp. Good luck and keep us posted.

You can also scan the engine coolant temp and transfluid temp with HPTuners as a double check. Our trans fluid after a run is usually 165-172* even using the transbrake. We run a single 24,000 trans cooler.

Keep us updated.

mine was doing the same thing after i added another cooler. i'm gonna move my temp sensor on the tranny somewhere else. one of my buddies used one of those tools to check it and was only as high as 170. and my gauge was on 210. so definitely check the sensor on the tranny.

The sensor is plumbed inline after the 2nd cooler returning back to the tranny. I can't check the temp with HPTuners because it's a full manual shift A4 with an 8" non-lockup 5100 stall with TB.

TXCAMSS how and where do you hve your cooler mounted? If I remember correctly you have the same ram air setup as I do (2 holes in the front ducted to the intake/lid)

Yeah I do run the dual 4" duct (SUX2BU) CAI set up. My transcooler is on the far passengers side facing the front of the car like the radiator. It's a tight fit, but I've always had it there and it seems to work. I'll look for some pics that might show it.

Thanks pics would help. I had them on either side "dope style" under the turn signals and moved them to the center in front of the air dam for better air circulation...so I thought. Temps were the same in both locations

As mentioned above, something doesn't sound right. If the car is running fine I'd think something is screwy with the gauge.

For ours to keep heat out we do all kinds of things. Tranny cooler, synthetic fluid, once we get deep in rounds we put a leaf blower under the car directly on the pan and you wouldn't believe how much it helps.

TTT

I'm still having issues. I changed the temp gauge, sending unit, and went with a cooler/fan setup infront of the radiator. I even cut the front out (pic) to make sure it gets plenty of air. Don't worry I have the SLP SS grill to cover the front when I get this figured out

Here is the cooler I went with: http://www.jegs.com/i/Perma-Cool/771/12311/10002/-1
I figured it would be plenty, but I am still having overheating issues. I'm using the stock hard lines to about 12" from the cooler then 3/8 hose. Would a larger diameter line help?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

At this point I would be suspicious of some internal trans issues... ?

I don't know the finish line 1/4 mi rpm/mph yet. I have only ran it 1/8 mi so far. In the 1/8th it ran 98.06 mph @ 5900 rpm in 3rd with 4.10 gear and 28" ET Drags. Is there a way to figure converter slipage in the 1/8th?

turn your cooler around with the fan in the back, that allows more air to "see" the cooler.
