How Much to Cut Rear End?
How Much to Cut Rear End? I am building a Camaro to run NHRA Stock Eliminator. I am ordering a new 12 bolt rear and need some help understanding what length to make it due to some wheel issues.
From backing plate to backing plate, I measured the stock rear ro be 59 1/4" long.
I bolted my 4 1/2" back spacing rims on (15 x 30 x 9 drag radials mounted on 15 x 8 Weld wheel with 4 1/2" back spacing) and they stook out 1/2" from the fender well.
Since I already have the wheels and I need to buy a rear, I am going to have the rear cut to make the wheels work. I figure if I narrow the rear by 3" (1 1/2 on each side) the 4 1/2" back spacing wheels will work OK.
So am I making the right call here by taking the rear end from 59 1/4" to 56 1/4"?

Pull the rear end, then stick the rims and tires under it, center the tire to fit exactly how you want, then measure between the rims and subtract the thickness of your brake rotors and that's how wide you need it axle to axle.
