Racing a A4, what gear to start in???????
I was just wondering what gear I should start in when I am at the track? I just leave it in D (00 TA) then get ready to launch. But alot of people tell me to put in 3 instead... What gear do I race in?? I looked at the manual and it says that 3rd gives more power then leaving it in D. Please tell me what you think?
thanks

I've never noticed a difference when switching the trans between D and 3. The car still gets me the same times no matter what gear I was in. I would leave it in whatever gear you usually use when your just driving around. The manual says you feel more response placing the trans in 3rd because it won't allow the trans to shift into OD until you hit a certain speed. Driving in 3 keeps the car in 3rd which makes the car feel more responsive than OD. Some people will say they noticed a difference at the track, but I don't believe it. I leave the car in D. Later

I have a A4 w/TCI 3500 SSF & 3.73s,and always leave in D.Mine, and I've seen several others, will sometimes bounce of the rev limiter on the 1-2 shift when in 3 when running at the strip.
There is a clutch pack called the coast clutch that is engaged when in 3,2,or manual low that comes on to give the trans more driving force.

OD. You will notice extra slippage on the 2-3 shift when the selector is in D (3) which is why many people bump the rev limiter with the selector in 3rd but not when in OD. This slippage is neither good for your tranny or your time slip.
