Default first time at track

well its going to be my first time going to the track, i have a stock 1999 z28, with a flowmaster 80 series, 6 speed 121k miles. what time at the 1/4 should i expect, also i have all season tires, is it worth going to the local speed shop and purchasing 2 street tires for the rear for traction. im hoping to get into the 13's and hopefully low 13's. any opinions?

You should see 13s easy, as long as your not at a high altitude, the only real good tire will be a DR, preferably a MT or Hoosier, you can get away with some 555 Nittos with your HP, the key will be your launch, but being an M6 car, you need to be careful on any DR or slick, NO street tire will hook worth a **** on an M6, you'll blow them off, its all in the practice, just hit the track & make some rounds, if you want to get a baseline & not chance breaking anything, go with the tires you have & just have fun, keep a log of each round, especially your 60ft. times, don't let people tell you your reaction time will change your ETs, don't get cought up in that, reaction times are only good in bracket raceing, they have NOTHING to do with how fast the car will go, the timer doesn't start untill you break the beam, just some food for thought being your a 1st. timer, so just go have fun. I would launch the car at or around 2500, don't just dump the clutch, but let it out as fast as possible if this makes sence.

6000/6100 rpm on the tach, but in reality it'll only be around 58-5900, the factory does this on purpose so not to over rev. the engine, you will also find that if you exsperiment on shift points, say start out shifting at 5600 in each gear, then 5800, then 6000, the car will go faster & faster, there is a limit of coarse, either you'll hit the limiter, or the car will slow down, on my bolt-on LT1, it runs the best at 6000/6100 shift points, it'll pick up 2-3 tenths from shifting at 55-5600.
