owner said it dyno'd @ 399rwhp? I just bought a 2000 Trans Am. The owner said it dyno'd at 399rwhp, but it seems just a touch low. What do you guys think? 2000 Trans Am 5.7/t56 119k (unsure of mileage when dyno'd) Underdrive pulley solid tensioner LS6 intake stock LS1 heads w/ patriot gold valve springs longtubes off road Y pipe magnaflow catback 5.0 short shifter 7 LED shift light set to 6500 Z06 motorsports wheels Futral F13 cam 112 LSA 3.73 gears Slp lid W/ K&N filter Ported MAF Ported Throttle body Spec Stage 3 Clutch Subframe Connectors Spohn lower control arms |
Sounds about right to me. Local guy had a F14 cam (little bigger than yours) car with fast 90 intake, put down 392 rwhp on the same dyno I did my car on. Not all dynos are the same. |
You bought that white T/A? I almost picked it up, seemed like a really good deal. It was a little rough around the edges but nothing that couldn't be worked with. How do you like it? |
Sounds right to me also. Longshot, your car looks sick with those wheels and badges on it! |

It needs some work, just changed the oil yesterday, greased the LCA's (I think they need more grease still), perhaps a bushing kit. I need to change to synco-mesh, and change the rearend fluid. Trying to figure out a squeak/slight bang noise. I know the longtubes are prone to hitting the floor, but I need to figure these things out. I think the sqeak/bang will be remedied by the bushing kit, and I am hoping a heavier gear oil will make the VERY slight whine go away. |
Numbers seem right to me. It just depends on what dyno is used. One might say 399, another 420, and another say 375. Unless you're going to get it dyno'd, just go with the 399. That is more than what mine puts down. |

Another thing I asked when talking about the cam, he didnt install it and doesn't know exactly when it was installed. He believes it was done by the owner prior to the one he got it from, which is some 30k miles ago. What does that mean? Means those valve springs might be reaching the end of their life. Check them out and replace if needed before they let you know in their own 'special' way which result in a lot more carnage! The banging you could be hearing could be from the Y-pipe hitting the floorpan, try and just change the bushing holding up the trans, that gets rid of it for lots of guys. In regards to your dyno numbers, I wouldn't be upset with that. 400whp cam only is very good, regardless of how you look at it. That's a good number and an indication that despite the mileage that engine is still healthy. |

Good, it just needed a teeny bit more work than I wanted to put in. I do remember when I was talking to him about the car he said that it had aftermarket lower control arms and he thought a bushing was going bad. That's more than likely where your squeek is coming from. Look into that. Another thing I asked when talking about the cam, he didnt install it and doesn't know exactly when it was installed. None of this was mentioned to me, but stupid me I forgot to ask as well, it was 10pm, I had just driven for 2 hours, and was tired lol. I plan on welding in a o2 bung, throwing my wideband in and doing some tuning myself, since I have HP Tuners on hand. My friend said it was rolling a lot of black smoke under hard acceleration, which leads me to believe it is running super rich under hard throttle (plus friend is a ASE mechanic, and he didnt seem too bothered with the smoke). I also plan on dyno'ing it again here soon, as our local motorsports forum does dyno day's every month or so. just to see what it puts down on their dyno. I washed the car up today, there are a lot more knicks and scratches than I saw before, but nothing that can be done about it now. Still cant complain for $6800. |
That sounds about right for those mods. All dynos read differently but they'll all be within the same range if you had a car with the same mods. |
