Ok guys I'm going to e doing a stockish rebuild on my ls1 soon. I have an 02 z06 cam and a set of 243 heads that I was planning on throwing onto my ls1 with a fresh rebuild just to keep all my driveability that and my budget wont allow a stall right now to support a larger cam. So here comes the kicker do I spend a grand in buying a rebuild kit and do the ls6 conversion myself or do I sell the ls1 and get a low mileage lq9 and use the z06 cam and heads to make a slightly hotter version of an ls2? I cant seem to find a dyno of an ls2 vs an ls6 to compare but I'm told the ls2 will make much more torque down low and under the curve thus making it the better engine. My only concern is will the 80 extra lbs of weight take any advantage of torque the ls2 style engine has away? Basically I'm wondering whats going to give me the most useful power and torque and get me down the 1320 the quickest?
Are you referring to an LQ9 as an iron LS2? Never didn't understand the using of commonality to the motor distinctions. Like a 5.3 as a "baby" LS1. To your original question, I would keep with the lighter block as we are only talking about the difference from 346 to 364 c.i. Our cars are nose heavy already. For what you are wanting to do I would stick with the beer can engine

OP, this has been talked about 79,264,529,735,292 times. Unless your running massive amounts of nitrous or boost, its not worth the extra weight. You are planning on doing a budget heads/cam build so you obivously are not financially ready for boost or nitrous. I say, aluminum.
I know the topic has been covered a number of times but my question wasnt for strength I was asking if the power to be gained from using the larger displacement would be worth the weight sacrifice of the aluminum block that and the fact a low mileage lq9 can be had for peanuts compared to even just a rebuild kit for an ls1. But with all the replies i think I'll probably just go ahead and go with an ls6 conversion. That being said I cant seem to find anyone with a full bolt on ls6 with an auto being dynoed I was thinking around 375-380 hp through a dyno? Sound about right?
