Stock LS1 what HP?

Stock LS1 what HP? I am thinking of buying a crate LS1 motor - probably GMPP part # 25534322. GM specs it at 320HP. Yesterday while loooking through the (September 2004) latest edition of "Chevy High Performance" I came across an article where this engine's base line dyno is shown as 420HP and an enhanced HP of 510 with ported heads, hot cam and LS6 manifold.
Is this magazine known for hyping up HP numbers or is the GMPP numbers conservative?
Any insights would be appreciated.
BTW, I am looking for around 450HP (at the flywheel) for my application - how hard is it to get to this number with a LS1?

the ls1 is underated, it puts down 290-320 rwhp depending on year and tranny. with h/c and bolt ons 400rwhp is pretty easily obtainable. you can hit your goal of 450 flywheel hp with a small cam and bolt ons as that equates to about 380rwhp depending on tranny.

Thanks guys - so GMPP underates the engine and it can easily be bumped up to 450HP at the flywheel. That is very good news.
My estimated drivetrain loss is around 15% so I should be aiming to get 382HP at the rear wheels.
I guess I should now ask if 500HP is easily achievable too?

500 HP at the crank is 425 rwhp assuming 15% drivetrain loss. You can get there with stock heads, a decent size cam, and all the bolt-ons. Or go the small cam and ported or AFR heads route if that suits you better.
Just figure the crate motor is coming with 350hp and 375tq. With bolt ons (headers, catback, lid, pulley, tb) you should be able to hit 400 at the crank. Then whip a cam in there and your 450. It's easy, but it costs money.
