Default Disappointing results

Heres the background information:

Bought the A4 2002 z28 six months ago with only 7300 miles. It was completely stock.
I added a Magnaflow cat-back, SLP air lid, smooth bellows & air filter. There is now < 13,000 miles on the car.

Yesterday a local shop added a torque converter, shift kit and trans cooler. Then it was tuned and dyno tested. The results were 303 hp .

Does this seem right . If so then stock hp must have been around 260 ish .

Stock A4 was ~290ish rwhp. 10rwhp gain is about right for those mods. Don't believe everything you read about gains. It does not work like that.

I lost 10rwhp going from an SLP SS exhaust to the Magnaflow. Gained 2rwhp from the lid. 0 from the K&N. I dyno'd on the same dyno before and after every mod.

What about the $150 tune? How did that help me?

the 3 hp gained from the bellows probably cancels out the 3 hp lost from the k&n filter. Then you add the catback and there you have it.

im assuming 303rw locked?
the $150 pcm reprogram isnt really a full tune but as they said dont worry so much bout the numbers. Just take it to the track and get some slips and tell us what ya get! i bet 12s as well w/ some DRs and a good launch
also just to put it in perspective my 98TA A4 w/ full bolt-ons except for ls6intake did 326rw locked so 303rw w/ a few mods aint bad at all

I'm not sure what converter you've got, but if it's at least a 3500 stall...pick up some nittos or better and consider yourself a mid 12 second car. Don't get caught up in the dyno numbers. Take it to the track.

Ok I will chime in here for you.

Here is my list of modifications to a 2001 Camaro SS with 45,000K

Freebie mod's
K&N FIPK CAI
160 TSTAT
Mac Midlength Headers
Mac ORYPIPE
Random Tech High Flow Cats
SLP Loud Mouth (at the time of dyno)
Yank SS3600 SS converter
Trans Go Shift Kit
Dynotune prior to this dyno
Trans cooler

Ok ready? Previously dynoed without the trans work.. 344.5 rwhp and 357 rwtq

with the trans work? 309 rwhp

Make sure they LOCK your converter on the dyno to see the optimum numbers so you can see if your mod's are dead on or not.

I lost close to 30 rwhp due to my converter not being locked on the dyno.

I also had a 150 shot wet go through and posted up 473RWHP unlocked converter.

SO dont frett, you have an unlocked converter, hence the small numbers.

By the way.. 12.3 I run with a **** short time of 1.70 on et streets with the 309 horse..

not to bad right?

I better 60 foot her.. 12.1's all day long.

Let's see you added HP with the cat-back, lid, smooth bellows & air filter(maybe), but you took HP away with the converter aftermarket converters eat up Hp on dyno's unlocked, but it will be faster at the track with a sticky tire

I ran 11.42 with 304 hp because of the 4400 high stall.

Was your converter locked or unlocked on the "before" dyno number? You need a true apples to apples comparison. Losing that much power from a Yank SS converter that is supposed to be very efficient is not right. I saw a difference of 18 rwhp between locked and unlocked on my TCI 3800 and I thought that was a lot but calculated about 96% efficiency.

Who cares about dyno numbers? I sure don't...if it runs the number that's all i care about. I would reccomend dynoing unlocked since that's how you race.

To summarize....dyno numbers don't mean ****.

your right.. dyno's dont mean ****. But if you are gonna be upset over your numbers.. then ask them to lock your converter so you can be HAPPY.

Dyno numbers are JUST bragging rights. Thats all.

And I had my converter locked on the dyno tune and then we switched over to a yank ss3600 and unlocked and I dynoed significantly less.

But I ran MUCH better..

I went from 350 unlocked to 372 locked with my TCI 3800 converter. Big converters do eat up the power on the dyno.

Before the cam, I pulled 318 unlocked with stock converter and run a 13.80 et (Thats good for our 10 million mile high track). Put the converter in and then dynoed 306 unlocked and ran a 13.30 at the same track.

Puling 472 unlocked with the 100 shot. Can not wait to see what this does!!!

that sucks that your elevation kills your times like that.

here in new york/new jersey we are spoiled.. 309 nets ME 12.3's with a bad tune and NO suspension mod's.
