Default Dyno question, please help

We have a mustang chassis dyno at our school. Whenever they run vehicles on it they never hook up and of the sensors to the vehicle. The main question I have is will not having the correct engine rpms mess up the dyno results? When the car is idling, the dyno computer thinks its running at 0 rpm instead of its actual idle rpms, so the rpms will always be too low. I asked a couple teachers about this and they said it wouldnt cause the numbers to be wrong, but it seems like it should. Does anyone with some dyno experience know the answer to my question?

If you have no RPM reference you will be looking at roller torque instead of engine torque. You need a good clean rpm signal to get an accuate engine tq/hp reading.

With a manual trans you can calculate a speed[mph] to rpm conversion. Why do they not use some kind of tach signal? What else do they not do?
