Default affects of degreeing a cam

did a little dyno testing with my cam today. originally put it in straight up. cam peaked a little soon. so, i retarded the cam 5* to make it 0*. (cam has 5* advance ground into it).

not a good thing to do. this just goes to show that you need to make sure it's installed correctly, or you can lose alot.

blue = straight up
red = retarded

WOW!! Pretty dramatic difference. I wonder what it would have done 1 degree either way. When you say peaked early, b y how much? Saw your other post, didnt pay much attention to where it peaked.

look at the graph. the power peak is right about 5700 rpms. retarding it 5* made no difference.

Duh, yeah, sometimes I'm a lil boneheaded. Possibly an airflow issue? Is it making vacuum at the end of the pull?

I'm suprised it lost that much clear across the board. 5 degrees is a lot of change either way. Also it does not appear to be a large cam with the peaks in the 5700 range. Thanks for the posting.

MAP reading was fluctuating at 94-95 kPa in the 6k range.

"MAP reading was fluctuating at 94-95 kPa in the 6k range"

Yep, that is a problem. Restriction somewhere in the intake track. Air filter, air inlet to the throttle body or maybe the throttle body. Get that fixed and you will see a few more ponies.

Yeah, it'll make a few more, keep it from dropping as much up top, but it wont make a big difference.

with the key on and engine not running the MAP reading is 101-102 kPA. so, i don't know if 7-8 kPa is going to change much.

i'm banking on the heads as being the restriction point for going past 6200 rpms. i knew they were going to restrict it some, but not this much.

the short story is you use a degree wheel, pointer and dial indicator and rotate the crank, one piston (to find TDC) and cam to make sure the valve events are where they should be.

And an aftermarket cam sprocket or other means to make adjustments.
