Isn't the GMMG just a simple catback? If that's the case then no cop should stop you for it.

GMMG was a production exhaust at that, it is in no way illegal.

but if you are just curious about how often you will get hassled about it.....

I have never been pulled over with mine. The closest I have got was some ******** called the cops, saying someone was driving around downtown "squealing tire." Needless to say, when the cop caught up to me, I told him to check for burnt rubber on my quarter panels or to feel if my tires were even warm. He did. He apologized and said he will remember the person who called the complaint in, that way I don't get hassled again.

GMMG (General Motors Motorsports Group)
Exhaust used to be exclusive to GMMG built cars (Zl1, Berger, Blackbird, etc). It could also be arranged though a dealer to send a car to them or vice versa in order to get a whole warranted package.

I've had mine for about 7 yrs, bought it on the 1st GP they ever allowed (on another forum) when they started selling the exhaust to the public. It's a loud catback for sure. If you keep you foot outta it and run cats you should not have a problem going by cops. I really like the sound and it sounds awesome on an lt1 with longtubes.

The nice thing about the exhaust is it sounds good on pretty much any motor with any manifold/header. It does get a bit raspy without cats.

I don't think you'd have a problem, but the GMMG exhaust is illegal in the state of Virginia. You can check the code, but it basically states that any exhaust that is, in any way, different than the type of exhaust that was originally on the car is illegal. Plus, the state code specifically says that a chambered exhaust is illegal. GMMG is a chambered exhaust.

If it were me, I'd still get the GMMG. I have a chambered system on my car and haven't had problems. Although, I make sure to keep it quiet around the cops. I live around your area too. I live in Fredericksburg and work on Quantico.

I like the sound. Throaty at idle, but gets loud when I step on it. Although, even though I have a chambered exhaust, mine doesn't sound like a GMMG because of the design. The GMMG has a straight 3" I-pipe with two chambered pipes where the stock muffler sits. Mine's kinda the exact opposite. I have a chambered I-pipe and straight pipes out to the tips. I also have cats to keep the rasp down.

Haven't been to the new Wegman's yet. My hometown (Brockport, NY) had the first super Wegman's (still there too). We had a Wegman's, but it was on the same scale as a Giant. It closed one day and about a year later... the first super Wegman's was born. This was in the mid to late '70s. I'm looking forward to checking it out when the crowds calm down.

Man... I need a life.

What exhaust shop did you talk with? If it's not Robert's Exhaust in North Stafford, you're talking with the wrong shop. You can find him just off Courthouse Rd (Rt 630). When you get off I95, turn east and take the first right just before the McDonalds. Drive a couple hundred yards and he's in a metal building on the right. He's the best exhaust guy in the area. His shop is closed on Fri, Sat, or Sun. Talk with him for a bit and he won't steer you wrong. He's very familiar with my set up since he pretty much built it with parts I brought him.

Yea that was the guy i went in there to ask him about it i was originally going to try to bring in an xr-1 muffler but he said that i wouldn't fit because the case was to big but i told i know it'll fit Ive seen pictures well long story short he said it would be 400 for aluminum steel w/ tips or 600+ stainless steel w/tips so i said no thank way to expensive and he wasn't the friendliest guy Ive meet before either.

Oh well, sorry to hear that. I've known Robert for years and he's considered one of the best in the area. I don't question anything he has to say about exhausts. Good luck find what you're looking for.

You should be fine in VA with a GMMG exhaust. I have no cats and have never had any trouble with my set up. I am sure mine is much louder than a GMMG aswell.
