The rotary is just faster and if you are careful with it, there are no problems. Two to three quick passes with a makita and Megs 105 removed a lot of the defects from my paint. I followed this with 205 via pc. Unfortunately, my paint is beyond the effects of even a rotary. I don't even know if wetsanding would work, a lot of my defects seem to be caused by a poor repaint.

Dan, there are people who use the rotary to apply wax/sealent. They save alot of time whether your compounding, polishing or sealing. The amount of time they save forced me to get over the gear of screwing up paint really quick.

Motoo344 - 3M makes a rubbing compound that is pretty much 2500 liquid grit, pretty tough stuff. Not to say you dont know what your doing but is your paint really that bad? I used to spend 14+ hours with a random orbital on a car before the rotary and now those same details are 4-5 hours. I have however come across cars that would take a day or two with a rotary.

I always thought if the paint isnt peeling or scratched it'll shine. I've seen a dull orange car turned into hooker lipstick red before.

Joe, my paint is pretty bad, not all areas, but the hood and spoiler are pretty rough. I spent some time last weekend with a guy detailing and he was helping me learn some things. Helped me out with the rotary a bit. On the hood, we wet sanded part of it with 2000 grit and could not remove the defects. Its hard to explain, but there appears to be 'pinhole' sized marks all over it, thousands of them. The spoiler is the same way but not as bad, even after 4 passes with a rotary and 105 via orange pad they don't come out. The defects seem to be in the paint not the clear or at least that's how it seems.

Back when I first got the rotary after I had practiced on an extra door I had, I used it on the trunk of my dads Mercedes. I had good results, I removed most of the swirling but I have a lot of micromaring. So I wanna continue to practice, I think I am close to getting really good results. Once I get a good combo going with the rotary and pc it should make correction a lot quicker. I really have nothing else to do right now, just applying for jobs. I figured I can detail friends and families cars for some side cash. There are a lot of detailers around here so at the very least Ill pick up a cool hobby.
