Default Oil Consumption in 2001 C5's

Why do they do it? Is there a fix and what is normal?

Thanks

I've heard that LS1s are prone to oil consumption through the PCV valve, and some people convert to the LS6 (I think?) PCV system which at least reduces if not eliminates it.

My car with 64k mikes burns 1.5 quarts every 3k miles, not sure if it's normal but it still runs and pulls hard.

the reason the drink oil is due to the low tension oil ring...to much clearance...

mine never drank oil but would get some oil in the intake due to the pcv, i converted to the ls6 pcv and had a catch can

i just bought another stock shortblock and im changing the rings to fix the problem but will still have the ls6 pcv and catch can to make sure i dont get any oil in the intake

Catch can is a good easy cheap mod to do, I even did one on my bone stock car. Still traps a decent amount of oil too.

IMO the catch can doesnt reduce oil cunsumption..due to a not so-efficient pcv system the spent oil and contaminents(that are caused by high crank case pressure) catch cans can help trap the gases that would gum up the intake, instead of contaminating the intake..
i drained my Catch Can recently and the fluid was carmel color and smelled like old gas..
+1 on the Catch can

Skeeter, its not uncommon for that amount oil to be consumed..as long as its not not leeking or coming out of the exhaust..

^ Correct, the catch can will not prevent oil consumption, just keep it out of the intake. Still worth while for sure.

the PCV system on the LS1 is terrible i used to have oil POOLED in my PCV hose where the valve is.

i converted my PCV system to the LS6 system and added a catch can (revextreme). the upgraded PCV system fixed it for the most part, and the catch can is only catching a little bit.

Not sure what you mean by relieve pressure, but a catch can is just used to trap oil.

Yes I wouldn't say my catch can reduced consumption but it prevents it from being dumped back into the intake. Stock my car barely burned a half a qt per 3k, after the cam swap it burns about 1qt. A lot depends on how you drive too. But yes the earlier motors are prone to blow by with lower tolerance rings, you will burn a little and lose some through the pvc.

If you are losing a a qt or so on a higher mileage car every 3k I wouldn't be surprised.

catch cans are sealed. you still have to run a pcv valve with one. some, like the revextreme, have a PCV built in

I bearly notice any oil consumption until I put headers on it and even then its still not much but I did notice the oil residue starting in the TB/Intake neck area. The catch can made all the difference.
