Default Baran Institute

www.Baraninstitute.com

Anyone heard of this place, actually went there or know someone who has?

I have heard a lot of autmotive schools are a joke, that's why I am asking.

I want to go for Automotive.... and I know of a performance shop in CT I might be able to get a job at while going to school down there.

That would be key.

Any help would be great!!

Thanks,
Nate

Hey dude what's up?

I actually am going to Baran right now. I just started the second mod (there's 4) a month or so ago. So far so good. Originally I was going to go to UTI, but Baran is close to home.

I actually wish I had gone to UTI. It's a bigger school, better known, and possibly a better school all around? A lot of automotive schools ARE a joke. Baran is honestly pretty decent, but there are some things that bother me.

I know Chris on the boards here, and he goes to Baran as well. So far I think he likes it a lot. Be sure to come down and take a tour of the place if your interested at all. I think new classes begin in June and October. I'll be graduating the end of Sept.

Pros:
You need two years of experience before you can get ASE certified. Baran counts for a full year... other schools only count for half
The downfall to this, is that we really don't get many vacations throughout the year. A week break between every mod...

It's close to home. And they just bought a new building, we should be in there come April. It's a huge *** building which will house all the schools. Right now things are separated by different buildings.

The teacher's are all pretty cool, but I've seen them come and go. It seems like they go through teacher's pretty quick here. I can't seem to figure out why. Mod 1 I had a guy named Ken, he left, and the lead instructor Frank took over, with another guy who was to take place of Ken. He ended up getting the boot before he could take over though.

Cons:
The are uptight about buying shop supplies, etc. It pisses me off, little things like electrical connectors, PB Blaster, and that stuff. It's hard as hell to come across the stuff out in the shop...WICKED ANNOYING.

Some of the head guys think they are hot **** and try to run the place pretty strict. Which is allright, but I've already exchanged a few words with the lead instructor of the current building.

Jobs are hard to find down there. I don't have one, and it sucks. I went from making 13 bucks an hour at a BMW shop, to nothing.... My room mate works at the Fed Ex shipping building, but he hates it with a passion. What's the name of the shop that you're looking at?

One last thing, make sure you get an Apartment! I'm at River's Bend through the school, and its 10x better than the dorms. All my buddies hate it over there. The food is crap as well, and it's one thing they push. Don't let them tell you otherwise! It's like 8 bucks a meal too. For the money you pay for a double room in the dorms, you can nearly be in an apartment.

We pay $390 a month in the apartments, usually there will be 4 guys per apartment. The 4th guy didn't show up where I'm at, so we've only got 3. it's mint, we still only pay $390. Baran covers electricity and water. All we pay for is the cable bill. The apartments are unfurnished, but it's still a much better alternative to the dorms.

Throw me some more questions.

I always heard Slowhawk Institute was much better as a pre-college unit to get some real life hands on experience . My recommendation.

As far a schools go i you get what you put into it. I have been in the auto bizz for a while and i have seen some kid's come out of Lincoln tech and it has not been GOOD!! I do not know if these kids tried in school or not but they were Master tech's out of school but in the real world they Master morons. So i guess if you go to school and realy try it will help, But you could also save your money and get a job at a shop and learn and advance as you get paid.

That's pretty much hitting the nail on the head right there. There are some kids in my class that shouldn't be there. Why waste $20k if you're not going to try and get anything out of it? Sleeping in class, etc. it's a waste.

My roommate's 28, and the other is 24, so they kind of keep me in check being 19. They are there because they want to be, as am I so everything seems to be going pretty good so far. I also have well over a year of full time work in the field, so not everything is as new to me, as it is to the other kids. I got perfect attendance, and honors in the first mod, and my average as of now is a 94 so I'm doing good.

It's worth it if you're going to try. If I were to do it again, I may have waited another year so I could be ASE certified in a few more things by the time I got out of school. Like I said, come down and check out the school if you're interested. Being on the cape, you're not that far away. 2 Hours at the most I would think?
