TULSA, Okla. -- Racing officials are stumped by a freakish accident at a Tulsa drag strip over the weekend.
An alcohol-powered dragster on a test run flipped over and shot back on the track to the starting line before slamming into a parked chase car.
The wreck killed the female racer, Shelly Howard, and Howard's son, who was in the Saturn chase car. Officials estimate the dragster was going 250 mph.
Racing officials say they're surprised the dragster held together after the flip. They say the cars are designed to break apart in a crash.
The International Hot Rod Association's president said he's never heard of anything like it in more than 40 years in racing.

I say that is a freak thing too!! DO you take it that the car went down the track for a run, had a hi speed blow over, turned around and went back up the strip to the start finish line. Freaky!!!

Surely a nasty, unfortunate thing to happen. Bet there will be some new rules for not lining up the tow cars in the staging area until the race car has made its pass.... Also, you guys running the big numbers with the LS1 F bodies and Corvettes, (low 11's and better..) have to start thinking about installing the S.F.I. crankpullies, scattershield bellhousings for M6 cars, and transmission safety blankets and flex-plate shields on your A4 cars....A clutch or flex-plate exploding at 6,000+ rpms is not a pretty site. It'll come right thru the floor and take a foot, or leg, right off...Not a pleasant thought, but the sad truth. Hope everyone's thinking about being safe, as well as going fast, for the '05 race season... Best wishes to all. WJ
