I've seen it done, but you have to raise it REALLY high to get the motor out. The methods I saw used did not look especially safe.

not to easy without a hoist. I think it has to go up about 3.5 to 4 feet.
I have done 2 1/2 to do trans jobs w/ a jack and jack stands. going back and forth front to back a little at a time.
I always come close to droping it. The jackstands always start to tip and Im running around w/ the jack trying to save it. Its never pritty.
Now I have 2 jacks, one for each side. Its much safer.
I dont think you can get 4 feet high safely.

With 2 jacks you might get it, but it would save you SOOO much time and effort with a hoist

We used a eye hook and a winch to get 2 engines out. We screwed the hook into the top of the garage, backed the truck up with the winch and it came right out.

I did mine in a limestone driveway with no hoist. Get two jacks and jack each side up at the same time. Jack as high as you can and then we put big wood blocks under the car. Lower in on them and put a block on the jack. Jack it up and repeat until it's high enough. Undo the driveshaft, wiring. tranny x member, K member and shock tower bolts, break lines and roll the whole deal out on the front wheels. It's not too bad. Putting it back in we had one guy in each fender well just squat the car up, roll everything under and set it down. Changing a clutch is nothing when everything is outside the car. Good luck.

You can get it out from the top if you want to. Although the swap done with the eye hook and winch was on a 3rd gen and an 88 chevy pick up.

Much easier from the bottom.. go to the lumber yard for some 6x6 scraps to hold the car up.. it's doable, there is also a tutorial/how-to on one of the boards.

I would be willing to help out if you decide to do it. I am curious as to how much work is invoved in taking it out through the bottom.

The house renovation are almost done, so it may be time to start some modifications on my ws6.

Just a quick question... are you asking for your new RX-7 or on a f-body? If its the rx-7, try asking the guy that did the conversion, he may know best.
