The mobile units aren't bad(i got stoped with the 72 elcamino). Like i said the main reason for them to pull you over is a past due instpection sticker, if you have one they will go over your whole car and do all the normal inspection tests(check your lights, horn, emissions and such) My elcamino didnt have a full exhaust and it dumped before the axles(which is legal by the way for a truck) and they couldnt test the emissions since they wernt going to crawl on the ground and they passed me lol.. Mind you this was atleast 7 years ago and things have changed a bit, they dont test emissions on newer cars, just plug in the obd2 scanner and look for codes... Not sure what they would do if you had headers but i know they will still look to see if the cats are still there.

on cars like ours you might to need to worry about them looking for things even though you have a good sticker.

if its loud or has big tires you can count on them looking it over if youre stopped.

if you get stopped they will look at everything trust me but they need a reason to stop you again like (cracked windshield, bad sticker, broken lights--headlights,turn signal, tail lights-- and that sort of thing If your car is visually fine than you will pass right through.. When i had my elcamino i had an old 93 inspection sticker that was yellow. When i was driving the car it was 1996 and the stickers were all yellow so i just cut the 93 part of the sticker off. I passed right through thoes mobile traps with an old *** sticker and my other friends got cought(their stickers were the last years color) My elcamino had serious rust,no tail pipes and it just looked like it would fail but visually it was fine and i passed right through. It wasnt till i had a bad sticker that i got cought and pulled into their mobile inspection unit.

I'm getting historic plates on my 78 Trans Am. to be historic, the car MUST be 25yrs or older, no execption. you don't have to go to inspection ever again, and I think you don't even need special insurance for it. I already have American Collectors Insurance on it, so it's insured as a collector/historic. $170 a year for full coverage. when I get around to the paperwork **** I'll registor as historic. For collector, you have to be inspected when you recieve the sticker. Your odometer is verified, and have a limit of i think 3000mi/yr, but I may be wrong, with 2yr inspections. You then can't use it for regular travel, commuting, etc. The quote I got from the DMV girl was 'do you use your car in parades', so whatever that means to you. I already have tinted windows, and went through hell getting it inspected "legally", so I'm not going for the collector reg. I've yet to see a mobile unit up here around bergen cnty, but I do see pigs pulling over a line of cars, writing out tickets, usually around Maywood, on rt. 17. What for, ie: sticker, lights, seatbelts, I don't know, but I haven't gotten nabbed yet, knock on wood.

I kind of got nabbed by a mobile unit last year. I was running open headers at the time, literally no exhaust, coming straight out of the collectors. I thought it was an accident that was causing the backed up traffic. I got very lucky as the officer that was assigned to look over the car initially to decide if I needed to go thru the inspection liked my car and liked the sound. He wrote me for loud muffler and sent me on my way.

What a bunch of scumbags! With all the **** that is wrong in New Germany, you would think these cash registers would have something else to do. As a truck driver, I support road side inspections of commercial vehicles because some self employed drivers will try to take short cuts like bald tires, faulty brakes, etc. But what the hell are guys like us really going to do? So what if we have cut outs, cams, and all the things that make it fun to own a car? What a shakedown, and shameless at that!

I got nabbed in my beater for "failure to reinspect" on the ticket it's marked failure to make repairs...I had fixed what i failed for but the cop was a dick and wouldn't give me a break making me miss my final review. I was talking to the mobile inspection guy and this is what i found out....I dunno if this is for every town but this holds true to Randolph NJ...they have a quota of 150 cars and will not leave until they reach that mark. If you have a valid sticker they will let you pass by, they're looking for overdue and rejected stickers. If you have a loud ricer exhaust you could get sent up there but most likely get a loud exhaust ticket, possibly a modified exhaust ticket. If you have tint you're getting a ticket and getting a rejected sticker. The units are requested by the police department...mostly just to make money, if you don't have your seatbelt on you'll get a ticket for that too (hence the big sign click it or ticket on the truck). If you have OBD1 you get the sniffer, if you have OBDII you will not. Then i talked to the guy at the state inspection facility and they actually hate one another calling the mobile guys "gustapo" or however you spell that and saying they take their jobs way to seriously and they don't get along with eachother which is kinda funny. On a side note i saw a stock looking z28 and a lambo get waived right through. I have a pic on my cell of my beater getting nabbed i don't think the cop liked that very much haha...anyway i got taught a 130 dollar lesson.

here is a question for ya: I am military and keeping Alabama plates. Do I need to get my car inspected? If so I am screwed and the DMV can kiss the ol' *** as far as I am concerned!
