I can't believe people are still obsessing over WWII. It ended 60 years ago, almost none of those people are even alive anymore.

The people of Japan and Germany are good, honest people. You can't hold innocent workers and business owners in contempt for what their governments did almost a lifetime ago. It would be as foolish as us still hating the British for the Revoloution.

Still doesn't mean we should necissarely buy their products over ours, but not on the basis of a 60 year old war.

How come no-one answered my question about what electronics they buy? Is it because we all buy electronics manufactured in asia? How is that any different than buying a foreign car?

Once again I will restate that you are foolish if you over pay for something that is undervalued, period. At this point, a lot of the entry level and mid level American cars are overpriced for what they are. That is why the Big 3 have to lure everyone in with huge rebaits and price cuts because the American public knows that for $20-$30 grand, their money is better spent on an import than domestic. Just look at the resale values.

Despite what you think, I want the big 3 to rebound and be back on top.

Jeez, The Japanese electronics thing is a well known fact. Their stuff is the best. Who the hell even makes TV's and Stereo's in the U.S. any more? And, you're comparing apples w/ oranges and talking in circles...Are you sure you're a chemist and not a politician? I hate foreign cars--except Mercedes-Benz. BTW: WJ

No, it's because WE HAVE NO MORE CHOICE, that freedom to buy true domestic brand home electronics was snatched right from our hands (right or wrong and regardless of who's fault it was), and this is my point exactly. I do not want to lose even more CHOICE when it comes to buying my vehicles.
Oldsmobile gone, Plymouth gone, GM in trouble...what's next?
When do we step up and say "hey, we better do whatever it takes to save these companies or the long term effects (children/grandchildren/great grandchildren etc.) could be disastrous".
I believe in capitalism, I believe in the free enterprise system...I also believe in the longevity and survival of America at all costs.
In other words I am saying yes, even if it meant sacrificing something (though it generally doesn't mean that, the domestic brands are quite good right now) the Amercian public should still be buying their own.
Just like the Japanese and the Germans STILL buy their own.

no, WWII wasnt the main point of my arguement, it was just to incite a little more thoguht into people so they can realize the impact of their economic decisions, and how depleting our economy and boosting the economy of other countries can have more repurcussions than just jobs.

and as far as the whole 'war crimes' issue, the avg. american doesnt see it as an issue, cuz they wern't there... one example: its a well known historical fact that hitler himself conceputalized the volkswagen as a means to populate his military highway and justify its expense. so any time someone buys one, they are in essence celebrating his dreams and aspirations... likewise, if usama bin laden conceptualized a brilliant product and it became popular, would you buy it, knowing who's ideas you were supporting? if you say 'no' today, would your kids or grandkids think the same in 50 years?

yes, electronics is an issue as well, but the automobile market, is one of the largest industries that impacts our economy (if not the largest), and we are absolutley feeling that impact today.

if the US wants to continue to be THE world power, we have to start having a little more pride in our own country and do everything in our power to support it and not other nations, who could potentially be our enemies tomorrow!

EXACTLY. Very well said. More attitudes like yours and our country and our U.S. auto industry wouldn't be 1/2 as screwed-up as it currently is.... WJ

I won't get into the politics of buying forgien or domestic, because in a way there are advantages to both...it breeds competition, wich improves our product. But thats not why I am posting.

You sir are a very sheltered person. You have obviously not visited one of these countrys. The japs are some of the most racist hatefull people in the world. I challange you to go to japan and see how they treat you. See how many American products they buy. See what kind of tarrifs and taxes are put on American imports. As for forgetting about WWII...we should never ever do that. What would happen if we suprise attacked a forgein country with no warning and regard for civilian casualties? Tortured people, and killed innocent people? The germans? Ask a German/polish/russian jew or any person of that decent, what they think of hitler. Tell your grandfather (if he was any kind of patriotic American) that we shouldn't hold a grudge about WWII. Most of our grandfathers left thier wifes and children to defend not only our Country and freedom but the freedom of lesser countries. They gave thier lifes, thier innocence, their blood for that cause. It is sheltered little mother ******* like you, that have grown up in a time where you have never seen war. Have never seen what it does to people. Never mind talking to your grandfather...he probably doesn't want to talk about it any more. Talk to a 40 year old army reservist, who called called to active duty in iraq or afganastan, and saw his buddy killed. Talk to a 20 year old marine who saw his drinking buddy blown to pieces by a road side bomb. Talk to a civilian contractor who was trying to repair phone lines, or oil rigs, who had a co-worker strung up by the neck and burned on tv for his wife to see. Ask them if they should forget about the past. It is not the governments doing this..it is the people. Our Country is based on the our Constitution because our people stood up to a government (the brits) and revolted and formed thier own laws, and way of life. As for us hating the brits....we have no reason to. We won. Ask a brit if he would like to buy some tea....that you found floating in boston harbor. Yes, they still hold a grudge! Ask a southerner about a yank...yes they are still sore about the civil war. So, should we obcess about WWII? No, but should we forget about it? Go ahead, you have the right to, because many Americans poured their blood and laid down thier lives for you to have that right. I'm done with my rant now...I hope you sleep well tonight in your warm protected bed you ******* worm!

wow talk about raging tempers and sensitive people. WWII will never be forgotten but it was a different time than now. Many more people were proud of their country. All I have to say on the subject is the american economy as a whole right now sucks the big one. Not just the auto industry is suffering. All business small or large are feeling the effects. I myself own two GM vehicles one being my f-body and another being a 05 saturn vue redline which just so happens to have a GM factory installed HONDA driveline in it from an acura MDX. So does that mean I shouldn't have bought it since it's powered by the japs?

Not because I own one, because I don't, and not because you own one, because you don't, but because a f'ing *** load of people DO one one.

Mabey you're right, shame on America for letting in so many foreign cars. But if US auto makers had stepped up to the plate 15 or 20 years ago and cut the fat, updated manufacturing facilities with more modern and efficient equipment, and started building equal quality cars with styling that people actually liked, then mabey it wouldn't matter how many foreign cars the government let in, people would still buy American.

All I'm saying here is the US Automakers are digging their own grave. The marketplace isn't what it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. Competition is high. US OEM's have stuck to their old ways of high priced labor, high priced managment, and sub standard products. It just ain't gonna work anymore, end of story.

Here's what's parked in my driveway:

Ford Explorer (American the last time I checked)
Pontiac Trans Am (same)
Saab 9-7x (Saab's owned by GM, and the 9-7 is built in the US on the Trailblazer and Envoy assembly line)

So tell me how I'm not doing my part.

Oh well, my point is made. It's ok to buy foreign if its less expensive or electronics, but cars have to be American.

And yes, there are still American electronics companies, just not that many and they usually aren't the best quality.

I have another question, I'm doing granite counter tops in the kitchen and should I limit myself to only American granite so I can be a patriot?

there are a decent amount of american electronics companies, and a bunch of them are even massachusetts based companies!
Boston Acoustics in Peabody, MA; Bose in Framingham (i think); and Cambridge Soundworks in Andover, MA (which is now owned by creative labs out of singapore) are all very reputable speaker companies, Raytheon is out of Waltham, MA (they are a defense product company, and also makes radars for civilian and commercial boats); RCA (not overly high quality though), General Electric is out of CT and makes Defense products as well as quality home appliances...

the list goes on and on... you just have to do your homework!
