Does Methenol go bad?

Default Does Methenol go bad?

A buddy of mine has a 55 gallon plastic drum of the stuff he has had for years and dosen't want it anymore.
Not too sure what to do with it.

I dont think it does. We have run year old to two year old in our monster truck with no problems. We go through a 55 gallon drum every weekend so it really doesn't sit.

Tell the wife the tranny parts are holding good.

No, the shelf life of methanol is essentially indefinite, as long as it is not contaminated by other chemicals and stored in a sealed container. If its exposed to the atmosphere it will absorb water though, since its hygroscopic, so keep that in mind. Its also best to keep in a metal container because it can dissolve certain plastics. The facility I'm employed at actually is the largest consumer of Methanol in NY state, we receive it in tanker trucks and store it in 5k gallon tanks.

i wouldn't risk it if its been there for years, meth is only like $1.50 a gallon, i would just get fresh if the origins or storage of the drums are in question
