Default PA Inspection Question

Ok guys I did some searching and came up with these results. Since I live right outside of harrisburg for an inspection all I will need to pass on my 2000 TA is the OBD test and the gas cap test. Im installing LTs and a TSP dual exhaust, but as long as I get it run out the back and the codes tuned out I should pass correct? Im planning on removing the AIR and EGR too, so if I get these codes along with the rear o2s tuned out from what I read it should be passable. If this is wrong alternatives would be appreciated such as o2 sims, etc. Thanks for all the help.

Edit: Any places that do a good, relatively cheap tune would also be greatly appreciated

if they look under you fail because you have no cats however depending on the place you will pass. Also noise pending on the place.

In my county they just plug the car into a computer and if it doesn't show any engine codes and the gas cap doesn't leak you pass. The guy flat out old me that a visual check is not part of the emmisions in Bucks county. For the car not to show that it was tampered with, you need a set of o2 simulators. If you just get the readiness monitors "turned off" it will fail. The guy also told me that the pipes must extend past the back of the doors for safety inspection.

You are correct you will pass. Dauphin co. has no visiual. no codes and some lube on the gas cap seal and there wont be any issues at all.

So just tuning the codes out wont work. Ill need to buy sims inorder to pass the OBD scan because they will see the codes have just been turned off, correct?

Hey reviving an old thread. I just talked to some people and some said that there is more to it than just the OBD and the gas cap. They said that will pass emission but theres a visual or something for the inspection sticker...anyone know if theyre right or wrong?

You will be fine with no cats as long as you are not throwing codes. You are not required to pass an emissions visual inspection with your car in your county. The following is the only requirements that you need to pass for the safety inspection sticker(taken right out of the inspection regulations):

(6) Inspect exhaust system and reject if one or more of the following apply:

(i) The vehicle has no muffler or muffler has external repair.

(ii) There are loose or leaking joints.

(iii) There are holes, cracks or leaking seams in exhaust system.

(iv) There is a muffler cutout or similar device.

(v) Part of the exhaust system passes through the occupant compartment.

(vi) The elements are not securely fastened with proper clamps and hangers.

(vii) The exposed exhaust system does not have adequate heat shield or protective system.

(viii) The exhaust does not discharge to the outside edge of the vehicle body, including a truck bed, or as originally designed.

For anyone saying you need SIMS to pass that's not true. I passed with the rear O2 sensors completely tuned out so there were no codes. I'm not sure about all states but the systems in PA just check for codes, they don't check any of the actual programming for changes, or least that's what I was told.

96-up do not need a visual inspection as long as they pass the obd2 scan test.

Another person here that passed emissions in PA (Greensburg) with codes simply tuned out - no need for sims. Mikey @ Rapid MS did the tuning.

I passed with no EGR system, no A.I.R. system, LT's, Y-Pipe, no cats, GMMG exhaust, 5.3L heads, mid aggressive cam, larger injectors, etc.

My T/A has been exempt for the past couple years (<5000 mi/yr) so they don't do the test at all now - but back when they did - no problems passing. No visual inspection here either BTW

As a PA inspection mechanic maybe i can shed some light on this.....
There is more to passing emissions than having no codes. There are monitors that keep track of all the different emissions system. I'm not positive how deleting codes affects these monitors. 2001 and up can only have one monitor not set, 2000 and lower can have 2 monitors not set.

the monitors are:
egr
misfire
evap
catalyst
heated catalyst (some cars)
oxygen sensor
heated oxygen sensor

thats all i can remember. Basically these monitors will set a code after they go thru a few drive-cycles with the problem present.

Glad we have a tech on here, Riddle this one.
In PA emissions must pass before state inspection. If your vehicle passes emissions, meaning the "readiness" checks, including tach signal, odometer, etc all pass; i have been told that by law they are not allowed to fail for cats or egr on the visual inspection. Reason its double jeopardy. I have talked to multiple friends that are techs and some say this is true, some say its not. Its all in the technician.
Yes when tuning a car you can change it so that it can "warm" up the sensors but not transmit and error codes. I just modified mine with EFILIVE and passed OBD2 scan with flying colors.
For the most part if you are concerned about your car and dont have a scanner, go to advance auto, ask them to scan your car, if you have no codes present and your readiness checks are good, you should pass.
BTW 1996 to 200X are allowed to have 2 Not ready's
200x are allowed to have only 1 not ready
i think that is 2004 but not sure.
