Engine swaps?
Engine swaps? I was curious as the legality of engine swaps and what will go through state inspection or not. For example if you put an LS1 in an RX7, or even the other way around, an older LT1 in an LS1 body (hypothetically). Do swapped engines need to post-date or pre-date the car? Have to come with the car from the factory? Or are they not technically legal at all?

if you have a car with standard registration(non-collectors/antique) you are responsible for whatever emissions and safety standards the actual car was held to when built.
if you find a later, OBD2 car to use, then it would be pretty easy to meet the standards since the OBD2 inspection is based on a plug in and there are no laws specifically disallowing engine or drivetrain swaps in new jersey.
if you swap in an earlier car, you would have to meet the emissions standards as the car was produced.

my blue rx7 with ls1 is registered in NJ under collecter car registration so no emissions testing but mileage is limited to 3k per year, checked every 2 years.
