true...the original point behind the Emancipation Proclamation was to end slavery in the south..it never said anything about slavery continuing in the North. And..then when freed slaves moved North, majority of people wanted nothing to do with them and themselves considered them to be sub human. Finally, a state has the ability to legally seced from the Union if it feels it is being treated unproperly or its states rights are being wrongly removed, etc, etc...then the south was attacked for their legal standing

The first free southern African soldiers were upper class from New Orleans and only did so because if all slaves were free they would lose thief status in society that differntited from slaves. While they fourht valiantly, they were not in total favor of conditions in thesouth as you make it seem, they fought to preserve their status in society.

I had heard that Lincoln had planned on sending as may blacks as he could back to Africa to a country called Liberia.
