You need to find either a MA or someone who owns land.
Most likely the MA's will have a season for the hogs, youll have to check the rules and regs. Now if you find a land owner, you can hunt hogs all year round on private property.
As for tricks and tips, that comes with time and all depends on where you are hunting.
To find where pigs are you look for what is called sign. With pigs, that is Rooting(where pigs root up the ground looking for food) , rooting will look like someone used a tiller on the ground. Then you have wallows, this is where a pig wil go to coat itself in mud to keep the bugs off, a wallow will look like a smooth sided little pool, usually you can see where the pig has been sitting in it.
And the list sign to look for is a rub, a rub is where a pig will come to a tree daily or more, and rub its body(usually its chest)on the tree and wear a spot on it(Pine trees are most common). This does three things that I know of keeps and scrapes bugs off, marks territory, and with pine tar, builds up a shield on the chest for fighting.
A good idea might be to find a ranch and pay to take a hog, you'll learn a lot from the guide, and you'll get your feet wet in hunting.
The gun thing I can't answer, you'll probobly need to take a safety course to get your license. Again you'll need to look at the rules and regs for this, and also if your on a MA you'll need to check with them.
Lastly you need to be careful with hogs, yes they are just pigs, but they are said to be the smartest domestic animals, and have the means to F you up! (pic below)
BE CAREFUL and enjoy it.
