Default Pic's of shaved turbine housing

I thought I would share these pictures of my new turbo with a shaved turbine housing.
I weighed the turbo and it now weighs 56#. Its my understanding that it weighed 73# to begin with. If you look at the bottom of the housing in picture #2 you can see there was alot of material removed.
This is a Garrett GT55, The shaving really makes it look intimidating

Very interesting. Looks really good, wonder if it will have any negative affect?

I think that looks awesome and dropped 17 lbs. Did you do it yourself or drop it off some where?

Big Pimpin! I love the difference in facial expressions between the two pictures, the second looks like a hernia is about to develop.

Every little bit helps and when it comes to new weight being added I thought it was a good idea. Now another 20# off of me and Ill be good to go.

The turbine housing was shaved when I got the turbo. My sponsor has the hookup on it.

wonder if it will let the heat escape the turbine more, but a blanket or coating should fix the problem if thats the case.

I've never put much faith into the explosion standards. My dad's semi blew apart a Garrett exhaust housing which is the same casting the T6 Gt42's come with. There was nothing left of it besides the flange, 2-3" of the backside of the housing, , the v-band that was clamped to the downpipe, and part of the flange that bolts to the cartridge. I believe Manny Buginga blew up an exhaust housing on his Mustang as well.

As far as heat retention, are you guys being serious?

So if something does happen you dont think that 17 lbs of metal will HELP retain it? And you dont think 17 lbs of thickness would HELP keep heat in?

You would be lying to yourself if you dont think both of these things are a negative side effect.

Nothing wrong with trying something new, let us know how it works.

I can't disagree that the extra material would help in a catastrophic failure. However not very likely as I doubt this car will ever create the extreme shaft speeds needed to make that happen.

As far as heat retention. It will reduce the thermal mass of the housing, it will get up to operating temperature faster and cool down faster. Exhaust gas traveling through the turbine will remain unaffected. Especially when the housing is coated or wrapped with a thermal bag.

at the speeds the wheels are going in these things, its not gonna make much difference IMO. I'd really have to see a before and after to see 17lbs gone though. It looks really cool!
