Default PT88 ok to add oil restrictor?

Hey all,

I noticed immediately after the install of the PT88 that my oil pressure dropped significantly at idle and cruise, the PT78HPS seemed to have a built in restrictor on the center section and oil pressure was fine. is it ok to add a restrictor to the oil supply line and if so what size. currently I have a -4an feed line to a normal -4an/npt screw in fitting on the turbo. the cavity on the PT88 is significantly larger and I am pretty sure since nothing else has changed that this is the cause for the pressure drop.

for a restrictor do you just drill a nitrous fitting to the appropriate opening size and insert between the female hose fitting and male screw in fitting?

Thanks in advance!

Chris

I would but I am not real comfortable with how low my oil pressure gauge has dropped to, I am seeing almost 15psi at idle and not thrilled about it. pressure seems fine under load with some RPM.

any other thoughts?

If at all possible, do not run a restrictor on that turbo. The TV series units like plenty of oil.

i dont think its the turbo causing your loss in oil pressure.
maybe pump or bearings?

yea bigger turbo, more power, more stress, motor is about to , well hopefully not the case (knock on wood) but im sure the problem lies somewhere else. Check every possible source it might be something semi easy to fix. Good luck

i never had issues on my 88mm or 94mm w/ oil pressure dropping??????????? maybe it is something internal in the turbo? it should not change your oil pressure. not unless you hurt a bearing at the same time you put the turbo on............

Is the turbo new? I bought a used pte88 before and it cause idle oil pressure to drop like 20 psi at idle.

well I found the culprit, it wound up being the turbo. I removed the turbo and capped the feed line and pressure was as dandy. the reason for remocing the turbo was it self destructed, the shaft snapped inside the compressor wheel and of course that let the nut and shaft bounce off the compressor wheel a few times sending aliuminum dust through my built motor. it was not a problem with oil pressure in the engine whatsoever, oil pressure with the turbo off the car is back to its steady 40+ psi at idle and 60 at cruise with the turbo on from day one idle psi dropped to 15-20 p[si and cruise was around 30. something inside this brand new turbo was wrong from day one, I thought it was a little tight right out of the box, but I chalked it up to it being a much larger frame turbo which i have never had before. seems I was wrong and it was not within spec right from assembly.

back to the drawing board.. I think I am going to give one of the budget Garrett Units a try the GT88. or possibly go twins. have to think this one through some.

That sucks Chris. The PT88's are usually very durable. Well if you need a GT88 let us know. That GT47 comp wheel is nasty!

Dr. Turbo,

Thanks.. I am looking at either going to the GT88 or maybe some twins.... not sure yet, I have already sold the single setup with a PT78mm turbo on it and was talking to Jose about the GT88 as soon as I sold this one so.. that is where I am..

from all the larger turbos out there I am windering if a set of smaller units may be more reliable, seems like most shaft breakages and issues are from the 88+mm turbos.. what are your thoughts being that you probably see alot of rebuilds and such come through?

Thanks!

We do tons of rebuilds weekly. It is hard to beat a pair of TC series units indeed.

Precision has some new units out with billet compressor wheels and V-band inlet housings getting ready to be released.. I was thinking a pair ofn their 6262's in a BB version.. I am not completely sold on the Billet compressor wheels yet from some of the stories I have been reading about them but that was of course on the larger units.

I guess I am just a little gun shy now with a torn up 3 week old 1600.00 turbo in my shop...

**** Chris, that sucks. Let me know what you find out as far as the cause of the breakage. I will be dropping a PT88 on my T/A this summer.

Also, Chris we can take a look at the unit if you like. Can tell you what may have casued the issue. Sometimes its just shaft RPM maybe to much....nothing can cure that, no matter who builds the turbo.
