Default Rod bearing clearance

Currently I'm building a 402 LS2 and will be running 12-15 PSI through Trick Flow heads. I'm setting ring clearance at .026 top and .028 on #2. Main clearance is 1.5-1.8 thou. As I understand, I will gain 1 thou upon warm up with the aluminum block. I've got the choice of having either 1.7 or 2.2 thou on the rods by using a standard brng set or by using half a standard and half of a .001. I will be running 10w-40. My machinist tells me that .002 is optimal and I'm looking for some input as to which side I should step to, over or under. Thanks!
