My fuel pump comes out the bottom of the bucket just enough to put the sock filter on it. I have ran it down past E many times with no problems, even under boost(damn traffic).
I know you said you were short on funds, but honestly I'd recommend giving Lonnie a call. He got me a dual intank pump kit with wiring harness for not much more than I could have tried to put it together myself. Add to that the level of support that comes with any purchase from him and it's a winning deal. He worked hard for me to get me the fuel system even during the Christmas-New years holiday, going above and beyond what could be hoped for.
